Revit Tip: Revit Sheet Numbering and Naming Standard

Consistent sheet naming reduces errors, accelerates navigation, and enables automation across documentation sets.

Recommended schema:

  • Sheet Number = D T SSS[.dd]
    • D = Discipline (A, S, M, E, P, C, etc.)
    • T = Sheet Type (0 General, 1 Plans, 2 Elevations, 3 Sections, 4 Large-Scale, 5 Details, 6 Schedules, 7 User-Defined, 8 3D, 9 Coordination per NCS-inspired logic)
    • SSS = Sequential number (zero-padded, e.g., 001–199)
    • .dd = Optional subset sheet (e.g., A101.1)
    • Examples: A101, S302, M601, A101.1
  • Sheet Name = Level/Area - View Type - Scope
    • Examples: L01 - Floor Plan - Core and Shell; L02 - RCP - Open Office; Site - Overall Plan - Civil
    • Title Case; avoid special characters (/, \, :, *, ?, ", <, >, |)

Abbreviations (keep a one-page standard in your template):

  • Levels: B01, L01, L02, RF
  • View Types: Floor Plan, RCP, Elevation, Section, Detail, Schedule
  • Scopes: GA, Core and Shell, Interiors, Fire Life Safety, Enlarged, Overall

Delimiter and padding rules:

  • Use " - " (space-hyphen-space) in Sheet Name for readability.
  • Zero-pad sequences (001–999) and levels (L01–L99) to preserve sorted order.
  • Do not embed issue status, phase, or design option in the Sheet Number; track those with parameters and Revisions.

How to implement in Revit:

  • Standardize in your office template: pre-fill example sheets, a Sheet List schedule, and a Browser Organization that groups by Discipline and sorts by Sheet Number.
  • Add shared parameters for governance (text): Building, Package, Phase, and Issue (for sorting and filtering, not for the Number).
  • Use a Sheet List schedule to audit:
    • Add conditional formatting to flag blank Building/Package or names that do not contain " - " delimiters.
    • Sort/Group by Discipline, then Sheet Number.
  • Batch operations:
    • Dynamo: parse Level from placed views to propose Sheet Names; auto zero-pad sequences; enforce delimiter rules.
    • Excel round-trips: export the Sheet List, correct names, re-import with Dynamo or an add-in.

Coordination for multi-building or phased projects:

  • Use a Building code parameter (e.g., B01) and include it at the start of the Sheet Name when necessary: B01 - L01 - Floor Plan - GA.
  • Use Package to group by Issued For (Review, Pricing, Permit, IFC) without changing Sheet Numbers.

Pitfalls to avoid:

  • Duplicate Sheet Numbers across linked models—reserve discipline blocks or use model-specific prefixes only if required contractually.
  • Inconsistent capitalization and non-padded numbers that break sorting.
  • Changing Sheet Numbers midway through permitting; lock numbers after the first external issue.

Governance and enablement:

  • Document the convention in your BIM Execution Plan and template welcome sheet.
  • Train teams with a 10-minute demo and a cheat sheet.
