Elevation markers are small elements with a major impact on documentation quality. When placed accurately, they create clear, coordinated elevations that communicate the building without cluttering plans or producing confusing sheet references. Establishing a consistent approach early helps every team member create elevations that are easy to find, review, and place on sheets.
In Revit, create an elevation by selecting the Elevation tool from the View tab. Before clicking in the plan, confirm that you are working in the correct level, plan type, and view template environment. The marker location and direction determine what Revit captures, so placement should be intentional rather than approximate.
After creating the view, immediately review its crop region and far clip settings. An elevation marker can be placed correctly but still produce an ineffective view if the crop is too broad, too narrow, or includes unwanted adjacent geometry. Use the crop boundary to frame the intended content, and activate a far clip when needed to prevent distant elements from appearing in the background.
For interior elevations, verify that the room’s walls are room-bounding and that the elevation view includes the required floor, ceiling, casework, finishes, and equipment. If the view is intended for enlarged documentation, apply the correct scale and view template before adding dimensions or detail items. This prevents late-stage rework caused by inconsistent graphics.
Plan visibility also matters. Elevation markers are often necessary in construction plans, but too many visible symbols can overwhelm the drawing. Use view templates, annotation crop regions, or visibility controls to show markers only where they provide value. Coordinate marker references with sheet placement so users see reliable view and sheet numbers after the elevations are placed.
