Revit Tip: Mastering View Depth and Far Clipping in Revit

Control what you see—and what you don’t—by mastering View Depth (plans) and Far Clipping (sections/elevations). These settings sharpen documentation, clarify intent, and can boost performance.

Plan Views: View Depth (Beyond)

  • Open View Range (Properties > View Range). Set:
    • Top: Highest plane visible.
    • Cut Plane: Where objects are cut (e.g., doors/windows).
    • Bottom: Lowest plane visible.
    • View Depth: How far below Bottom you still “see” elements as beyond.
  • Elements beyond appear with the “Beyond” line style. Tweak it at Manage > Additional Settings > Line Styles to control pattern/weight for subtle context.
  • Use Plan Regions to locally override View Range where stairs, sloped slabs, or mezzanines need deeper (or shallower) visibility.
  • Prefer View Depth over Underlay when documenting: Underlay is for quick reference; View Depth is for controlled, intentional graphics.

Sections and Elevations: Far Clipping

  • In the view’s Properties, set Far Clipping to:
    • Off: Infinite depth (no limit).
    • Clip without line: Limits depth, no delineation at the clip plane.
    • Clip with line: Limits depth and draws a far clip line (great for “deep section” graphics).
  • Adjust Far Clip Offset to include only what matters: cut face + near context for detail views; a larger offset for overall elevations.
  • Enable Depth Cueing (Graphic Display Options) to fade distant geometry—excellent for legibility in elevations with rich context.
  • When using linked models, confirm the link’s Display Settings (By Host View vs By Linked View). Mixed settings can cause unexpected missing elements at the far clip.

Consistency via View Templates

  • Capture View Range, Far Clipping, Depth Cueing, and V/G overrides in a View Template. Apply it to all plans/elevations of the same role (e.g., “AR-Plan-Floor Overall,” “AR-Elev-Presentation”).
  • Document the intended clip strategy in your BIM Execution Plan and template notes to keep teams aligned.

Performance and Clarity Wins

  • Shallower Far Clips often reduce draw time—especially with complex façades, entourage, and linked site models.
  • Use a small “working” elevation with tight Far Clip for detailing; keep a separate, broader presentation view when needed.

Troubleshooting

  • Cut elements missing in plans? Verify Cut Plane vs element elevation and category cut-ability.
  • Too much clutter beyond? Tighten View Depth or lighten the “Beyond” line style.
  • Elevation looks empty? Check Far Clipping isn’t set too shallow; confirm Discipline and Phase settings.

Pro workflows

  • On sheets, overlay two views: foreground (tight Far Clip, bold lineweights) + background (deeper view halftoned) for precise focus with subtle context.
  • Coordinate façade elevations by pairing a Scope Box (for crop extents) with a standardized Far Clip in the template.
