Revit Tip: Copy/Monitor workflow for linked Revit models

Copy/Monitor is your safety net for linked models—use it to track critical datums and elements so consultant updates never blindside your documentation.

When to use it

  • Multi-discipline projects where architectural, structural, and MEP models evolve in parallel.
  • Projects with external consultants where your model must follow their levels and grids.
  • Large teams needing auditable, model-based change notifications rather than email guesswork.

What to Copy vs Monitor

  • Copy: Levels and Grids (always). These control view ranges, hosting, and dimensioning.
  • Copy selectively: Structural Columns and Openings if you must host content or schedule them internally.
  • Monitor (don’t copy): Walls, Floors, and major systems you don’t intend to own. Reduces duplication and clashes.

Setup (clean and consistent)

  1. Link consultant models (Manage Links) and establish Shared Coordinates before any monitoring.
  2. Collaborate tab > Copy/Monitor > Select Link.
  3. Open Options: where supported, map source types to your office standards to avoid “Type 1, Type 2” sprawl.
  4. Use Batch Copy for Levels and Grids; copy individually for exceptions.
  5. For elements you don’t want to duplicate, pick Monitor and click source–target pairs.
  6. Finish, Sync with Central, and note your monitoring scope in the model journal or issue log.

Working with updates

  • When a link changes, run Coordination Review (Manage tab) to accept, reject, or postpone each change.
  • Document decisions with comments—your future self and teammates will thank you.
  • After accepting datum shifts, review hosted content (doors, casework, tags) for rehosting and alignment.

Practical tips

  • Limit monitoring to what affects documentation and hosting. Fewer monitored elements = faster, cleaner reviews.
  • Name copied datums to match consultant conventions; align with your BIM Execution Plan.
  • Avoid copying walls/floors unless you own those systems. Use view filters, linked views, or monitoring instead.
  • Lock in a schedule: Coordination Review after each link update or at fixed milestones.
  • If a monitored relationship breaks, use Remove Monitor, realign the link/element, then re-establish monitoring—don’t stack warnings.
  • Avoid mirroring or reloading links with different origin/rotation post-setup; it can invalidate monitors.

Common pitfalls to avoid

  • Over-monitoring: Treat Copy/Monitor as targeted QC, not a blanket sync tool.
  • Skipping shared coordinates: Misaligned datums will cascade into hosting and dimension errors.
  • Ignoring warnings: Unresolved items accumulate and slow teams down—review and resolve promptly.
  • Type bloat: Always map source types to standards in Options before batch copying.

A disciplined Copy/Monitor workflow turns consultant updates into controlled, reviewable actions—no re-modeling, no surprises. For Revit licenses, expert guidance, and coordination-friendly tools, start with NOVEDGE, and explore Revit solutions curated by NOVEDGE.
