Revit Tip: Building a Reliable Revit Project Template

A clean project template gives every Revit project a reliable starting point. Instead of rebuilding standards, views, families, and settings each time, invest in a template that reflects how your team actually documents and delivers work.

Start with a clear principle: a template should contain standards and reusable setup, not project-specific content. The goal is consistency without unnecessary file weight or obsolete information.

  • Begin with the correct base template. Choose the Architectural, Structural, Construction, or MEP template that matches your discipline. This preserves relevant system families, settings, and default content while avoiding unnecessary categories.
  • Set project units before modeling begins. Go to Manage > Project Units and define length, area, volume, angles, and other formats your office uses. Establish rounding, decimal precision, and unit symbols so schedules and annotations remain consistent.
  • Standardize naming conventions. Create clear rules for views, sheets, levels, grids, families, parameters, and worksets. For example, use predictable prefixes for plans, sections, details, and coordination views. Consistent names make models easier to navigate, filter, and hand off.
  • Build essential view templates. View templates are among the most valuable parts of a Revit template. Configure dedicated templates for working plans, presentation plans, reflected ceiling plans, sections, elevations, demolition, coordination, and printing. Control visibility, detail level, scale, discipline, filters, annotations, and graphic overrides from one location.
  • Prepare browser organization. Configure the Project Browser to group views and sheets by parameters that support your workflow, such as discipline, phase, package, or sheet series. A well-organized browser prevents teams from creating duplicate or misplaced views.
  • Include only approved content. Load commonly used title blocks, tags, symbols, detail components, line styles, fill patterns, materials, and key families. Remove sample content, duplicate families, unapproved materials, and anything that does not serve the production workflow.
  • Create reliable annotation standards. Define text types, dimension styles, tags, keynote settings, object styles, line weights, and filled regions before a project starts. Avoid allowing each user to create ad hoc styles, which quickly leads to inconsistent drawings.
  • Use shared parameters strategically. Add only parameters needed for schedules, tags, data exchange, or model management. Use a controlled shared parameter file so the same parameter is applied consistently across families and projects.
  • Set up sheets and schedules. Include standard sheet types, title blocks, revision settings, typical schedules, and schedule formatting. This lets teams begin documenting immediately while maintaining a consistent graphic identity.
  • Keep the template lightweight. Purge unused content, audit the file periodically, and avoid loading large manufacturer libraries into the template. A slow template creates a slow project from day one.

Before releasing a template, test it with a small pilot project. Create views, place families, generate sheets, apply filters, and export a sample deliverable. This reveals broken references, visibility conflicts, missing content, and impractical naming rules before the template affects a live project.

Maintain the template as a controlled office resource. Assign ownership, document changes, version the file, and update it on a planned schedule rather than letting individual project teams modify standards independently. When a useful improvement is identified, validate it first and then incorporate it into the next approved release.
