Layer plot settings determine whether information appears on the final sheet, making them essential for producing clear, professional AutoCAD documentation. A layer can remain visible and useful in model space while being excluded from plotted output—a powerful distinction when managing construction geometry, reference notes, viewport guides, or internal coordination data.

Use the Plot column in the Layer Properties Manager to control this behavior. When the plot icon is enabled, objects on that layer print or publish normally. When it is disabled, objects remain visible on screen but do not appear in plotted drawings or PDFs.

  • Open Layer Properties Manager: Type LAYER or use the Layer Properties button on the Home tab.
  • Locate the Plot column: Look for the printer icon beside each layer name.
  • Toggle plotting: Click the printer icon to enable or disable output for a selected layer.
  • Verify before publishing: Use Plot Preview to confirm that non-plot layers are excluded as intended.

A practical example is a DEFPOINTS layer. AutoCAD treats this special layer as non-plot by default, which makes it useful for temporary construction objects and dimension definition points. However, relying exclusively on DEFPOINTS is not always ideal, especially in shared drawing environments. Creating dedicated non-plot layers gives your team a clearer, more consistent standard.

Consider establishing layers such as:

  • V-NPLT-GUIDE for layout guides and temporary alignment geometry
  • V-NPLT-NOTE for internal drafting comments
  • V-NPLT-REF for reference information needed during design but not on issued documents
  • V-NPLT-VPORT for paper-space viewport frames, when your office standard requires them to remain visible on screen but not print

Including a recognizable non-plot identifier, such as NPLT, in the layer name helps prevent accidental output. This naming convention is especially valuable on projects with multiple contributors, external references, and frequent plotting revisions. Anyone reviewing the Layer Properties Manager can immediately understand the intended purpose of the layer.

Do not confuse turning plotting off with freezing or turning a layer off. Each control has a different purpose:

  • Off: Hides the layer on screen, but it can still plot if turned back on.
  • Freeze: Hides the layer and can improve drawing performance, particularly with complex xrefs.
  • Plot off: Keeps the layer visible for drafting while preventing it from appearing in the printed or PDF deliverable.

For layout work, remember that plotting is controlled at the layer level, not separately for individual viewports. If a layer must be visible and plotted in one viewport but invisible in another, use viewport-specific freezing. If it must be visible in a viewport but never printed anywhere, the Plot setting is the appropriate control.

Layer plot settings should be built into your drawing template rather than adjusted at the end of every project. A well-configured template reduces plotting errors, protects office standards, and speeds up document production. Save the configuration in a DWT template or preserve it through Layer States for easy reuse.

Before issuing a drawing, perform a quick quality-control check: inspect non-plot layers, review Plot Preview, and verify the selected plot style table. Small checks like these prevent internal notes, construction lines, and unwanted viewport boundaries from reaching clients or contractors.
