Quick win: declutter your viewport by fine-tuning Display Options so you only see what matters for the task at hand.
Fast access
- Open Viewport Configuration: Shift+V (or right‑click empty viewport > Configure…).
- Use the Filter tab for on/off switches, the View tab for sizes and guides, and the Display tab for shading and lines.
- For quick toggles, use the viewport’s Filter menu to hide/show common helpers without opening the dialog.
What to toggle and why
- Node icons: Nulls, Cameras, Lights, Joints, Deformers, Generators. Hiding these “helper” icons reduces on-screen noise during layout and animation, especially in rig-heavy scenes.
- Handles: Turn off Show Object Handles when you’re framing shots or evaluating silhouettes; re-enable for precise modeling and rig edits. Adjust Handle Size in the View tab to fit high‑resolution monitors.
- Guides: Toggle Grid, Workplane, World Axis, Horizon, Safe Frames, Composition guides (thirds/center) as needed. Keep Safe Frames on when working through camera, off when modeling.
- Detail overlays: SDS Lines, Isoline Editing, Vertex Normals, N‑gons and Triangulation lines. Enable only while diagnosing topology or shading issues.
- Motion paths and constraints visuals: Great for timing adjustments; disable before playblasting for a clean preview.
Preset profiles you can save
- Modeling Focus: Handles on (medium size), Grid + Workplane on, Isoline Editing on, node icons for deformers visible, Safe Frames off.
- Rig/Animation: Joints, Constraints, Motion Paths on, Handles small, Grid off, Safe Frames on when in-camera.
- Layout/Lookdev: Cameras/Lights visible, Object icons minimal, SDS Lines off, Safe Frames on, Guides off.
- Review/Playblast: All icons/handles/guides off except Safe Frames; use consistent shading and material override if needed.
Workflow boosters
- Per‑viewport memory: Each viewport stores its own configuration. Dedicate one to “clean review” and another to “work” view.
- Layers synergy: Place rigs, guides, and helpers on layers and use layer visibility in tandem with Filter settings for one‑click context switches.
- Performance: In dense scenes, hiding Hair guides, Splines, Generators, and Deformer cages can noticeably improve playback and interaction.
- Reset fast: If selection feels blocked or icons vanished, load the Default preset in Viewport Configuration to restore expected behavior.
- Save presets: Create named presets (Model, Animate, Review) and bind them to shortcuts for reliable, team‑wide consistency.
Production notes
- Lock in your review preset when sending playblasts or dailies to avoid distracting overlays.
- Document team presets in your show bible; keeping everyone aligned on viewport hygiene saves time in reviews.
