Cinema 4D Tip: Converting Cinema 4D Primitives to Editable Polygons

Creating editable polygons is the moment a Cinema 4D primitive becomes truly yours. Parametric objects are ideal for fast setup, but converting them to editable polygon objects gives you direct control over every point, edge, and face for custom modeling.

Start with a primitive such as a Cube, Cylinder, Sphere, or Capsule. Adjust its parameters first—segments, radius, orientation, and size—because these live settings are no longer available once the object is converted. When the base shape is ready, select it and press C, or use Mesh > Conversion > Make Editable.

The object will change from a parametric primitive into a polygon object. You can now enter the component modes in the left toolbar:

  • Point mode: Move individual vertices to reshape the silhouette or correct proportions.
  • Edge mode: Select edges for beveling, sliding, cutting, or creating supporting loops.
  • Polygon mode: Select faces for extrusions, inset operations, material assignments, and deletions.

A reliable workflow is to preserve the original primitive before conversion. Duplicate it first with Ctrl/Cmd + Drag, or use a copy as a hidden backup. Name the versions clearly, such as Chair_Base_Parametric and Chair_Base_Edit. This gives you a non-destructive fallback if you later need to revise the overall dimensions or segment count.

Once converted, inspect the mesh before you begin modeling. A primitive with too few segments can produce blocky curves, while excessive segments make later editing slower and can complicate topology. Use only the density your design needs. For example, a product visualization model may need more radial segments on visible rounded parts, whereas a distant background asset can remain much simpler.

After making an object editable, these practices help maintain clean geometry:

  • Use Live Selection with “Only Select Visible Elements” when you need controlled front-facing selections.
  • Switch to an orthographic viewport for accurate point movement and alignment.
  • Use the Extrude tool to extend selected polygons while preserving connected topology.
  • Use Inner Extrude before extruding a face when you need a border, panel, or inset detail.
  • Add bevels to sharp edges for more realistic highlights in renders.
  • Check polygon normals if surfaces render dark, disappear, or shade incorrectly.

A common beginner mistake is converting too early. Keep generators, splines, deformers, and primitives procedural for as long as possible. Convert only when a specific polygon-level edit is required. This approach keeps your Cinema 4D scene flexible, easier to revise, and less dependent on destructive changes.

It is also important to understand that “editable” does not automatically mean “optimized.” If you delete faces, make cuts, or combine objects, periodically review the topology. Remove unnecessary edges, avoid accidental overlapping polygons, and look for stretched faces that may produce shading artifacts. Clean topology improves modeling speed, UV work, deformation, and render reliability.
