PDF underlays are useful for bringing issued drawings, surveys, markups, and reference documents into AutoCAD. However, an entire PDF sheet can obscure active geometry or make a drawing visually crowded. Use PDFCLIP to display only the portion of an attached PDF that matters.
Clipping does not alter the original PDF file. It creates a display boundary in the current drawing, so the same source document remains intact and can still be used elsewhere. This makes PDFCLIP especially useful when a large plan sheet contains only one detail, room, elevation, or area needed for coordination.
A rectangular clip is ideal for clean, orthogonal content such as title blocks, details, schedules, or scanned sheets. Choose a polygonal clip when the area has an irregular shape or when you need to avoid showing nearby notes, borders, stamps, or unrelated drawing information.
For example, if a consultant sends a PDF containing a full floor plan but your drawing requires only the stair core, attach the PDF and create a tight polygonal clipping boundary around the core. The result is a cleaner reference that is easier to snap to, review, plot, and coordinate with your own design geometry.
Use these practical habits to make PDF clipping more effective:
PDFCLIP is also valuable in layouts. A clipped underlay can be positioned near a detail viewport, revision cloud, or presentation sheet without exposing the full source page. This is cleaner than covering unwanted PDF areas with wipeouts and is much easier to revise when the reference changes.
Remember that clipping is primarily a visual-control tool. It does not crop the PDF externally, reduce the source file size, or convert the PDF into editable AutoCAD objects. If editable vector content is required, evaluate PDFIMPORT instead. For dependable AutoCAD workflows, software options, and design resources, visit NOVEDGE’s AutoCAD collection.
A well-clipped PDF underlay keeps reference drawings focused, readable, and easier to coordinate—without sacrificing access to the original document.
