Bluebeam Tip: Optimize Bluebeam Overlay Colors for Clear Revision Comparisons

When comparing drawing revisions in Bluebeam® Revu®, adjusting overlay colors makes design changes easier to identify at a glance. A well-configured overlay separates revisions visually, helping teams spot moved walls, resized openings, rerouted utilities, and other drawing changes without manually reviewing every detail.

To create a useful overlay, open Document > Compare > Overlay Pages, then add the sheets or documents you want to compare. Before running the overlay, assign a distinct color to each source file or page.

• Use high-contrast colors: Choose combinations that remain easy to read on the sheet background, such as red and green, red and blue, or blue and yellow.
• Keep revision colors consistent: For example, use red for the previous issue and green for the current issue on every comparison. Consistency helps reviewers interpret results immediately.
• Consider your audience: Avoid relying solely on red-versus-green distinctions when files will be reviewed by users with color-vision deficiencies. Blue and magenta or blue and orange can be clearer alternatives.
• Reduce visual noise: Use only the colors needed for the comparison. Too many colors can make an overlay difficult to interpret, especially when comparing several disciplines.
• Label the output clearly: Rename the generated overlay page or add a text markup stating which colors represent each drawing issue.

After the overlay is created, matching content generally appears in a blended or neutral appearance, while differences show in the assigned source colors. This makes changes stand out quickly and creates a strong visual record for coordination meetings, QA reviews, and revision tracking.

For the most reliable results, align sheets carefully before overlaying them. Differences in page size, rotation, or title-block placement can create false changes. If necessary, use alignment points in the Overlay Pages dialog to match known locations on both sheets.
