Tooltips make interactive PDF forms easier to understand, complete, and maintain. In Bluebeam Revu, a tooltip is the short instructional text that appears when a user hovers over a form field. It is especially valuable when space on the form is limited or when a field’s purpose may not be immediately obvious.
To add a tooltip, open the Forms panel, select the desired field, and open its Properties. Enter clear guidance in the Tooltip field, then save the PDF and test the form in a standard PDF viewer.
Tooltips also improve accessibility. Screen readers can use them to communicate a field’s purpose, helping users navigate forms with greater confidence. This is particularly important for inspection reports, submittal logs, closeout documents, and other forms shared across diverse project teams.
A useful quality-control step is to review every field from the perspective of someone who did not create the form. If a user could misinterpret a field label, add a tooltip. For repeated fields, such as dates, responsible parties, or approval statuses, standardize tooltip language across the entire document set.
Before distributing the form, test it by hovering over fields and completing a sample record. Confirm that tooltips are informative, field names are clear, and required-field settings support the intended workflow.
