Bluebeam Tip: Detect and Count Repeated Symbols with VisualSearch and OCR

Find every instance of a repeated symbol or note on scanned plan sets by pairing VisualSearch with OCR. This workflow speeds takeoffs, QA/QC, and revision control on even the messiest legacy PDFs.

  • Prepare your drawings
    • Run OCR on scanned PDFs so text becomes searchable; set the correct language and enable deskew/clean-up options for better recognition.
    • If possible, flatten temporary markups and optimize images to reduce noise before searching.
  • Start VisualSearch
    • Open the Search panel and choose VisualSearch.
    • Draw a selection around a clear instance of the target symbol/tag. Exclude nearby elements that could confuse matching.
  • Tune match quality
    • Adjust Sensitivity to balance false positives vs. misses.
    • Allow small Rotation and Scale ranges to catch rotated/printed-at-scale variations.
    • Enable color-agnostic matching if plan colors vary.
  • Set the search scope
    • Choose Current Document, All Open Documents, or a Folder (include subfolders for full plan sets).
  • Review and confirm
    • Scan the results list; zoom to each hit and uncheck false positives before applying actions.
  • Convert results into actionable data
    • Markup all checked results using a standardized Count tool from your Tool Chest (assign Subject, color, and layer).
    • In the Markups List, add Custom Columns (e.g., Trade, Spec Section) to track quantities.
    • Export to CSV/Excel for estimates or create a PDF Summary for submittals.

Pro tips:

  • OCR first on scans; VisualSearch excels at symbols, and OCR makes adjacent text filterable and report-ready.
  • Save your selected symbol as a reusable Tool Chest item to keep future searches and counts consistent.
  • Use Layers to hide/show counts by discipline during review meetings.
  • After QA, Flatten counts to lock deliverables.
