Bluebeam Tip: Compare PDF Revisions in Bluebeam Revu

Comparing two PDF documents in Bluebeam Revu is a fast, reliable way to identify drawing revisions before they become coordination issues.

Rather than manually flipping between sheets, use Compare Documents to analyze two versions of the same drawing and create a clear visual record of the differences. This is particularly useful for addenda, revised plan sets, shop drawings, and consultant updates.

  • Open one of the PDFs, then select Document > Compare Documents.
  • Choose the older file as the original document and the newer file as the revised document.
  • Select the appropriate page ranges. For drawing sets, confirm that the sheet order and page labels match before running the comparison.
  • Review the alignment settings. Revu can automatically align documents, but selecting common reference points can improve results when sheets have shifted or were plotted differently.
  • Run the comparison and save the resulting PDF as part of the revision-review record.

Revu highlights detected changes with markups, allowing reviewers to immediately focus on added notes, modified dimensions, relocated equipment, or changed drawing geometry. Use the Markups List to sort, filter, assign statuses, and add comments to each identified revision.

For the most dependable results, compare like-for-like files:

  • Use PDFs with the same sheet size and orientation.
  • Compare individual sheets when a full set contains reorganized pages.
  • Confirm scale, rotation, and crop settings before starting.
  • Review results visually; automated comparison identifies differences, but professional judgment determines their project impact.

Save time by establishing a consistent naming convention, such as Architectural_A101_Rev01 and Architectural_A101_Rev02. This makes selecting the correct source and revised files much easier.
