AutoCAD Tip: Create and Edit Smooth Curves with AutoCAD Splines

Use splines when a design requires a smooth, flowing curve that would be difficult or time-consuming to construct with arcs, fillets, or many short polyline segments. In AutoCAD, the SPLINE command creates non-uniform rational B-splines (NURBS), making it ideal for ergonomic profiles, product shapes, landscape features, vehicle contours, piping routes, and conceptual design work.

To begin, type SPLINE at the Command line, then specify a sequence of fit points. AutoCAD draws a smooth curve through or near these points, depending on the creation method and settings. Press Enter when finished, then define optional start and end tangency directions if the curve must transition smoothly into adjacent geometry.

  • Place fit points intentionally. Each point influences the spline’s shape. Use fewer points than you might expect; too many closely spaced points can create unwanted waviness and make later edits difficult.
  • Use Object Snaps. Activate precise snaps such as Endpoint, Midpoint, Center, Tangent, and Intersection before selecting fit points. This ensures the spline connects accurately to existing geometry.
  • Control tangency at endpoints. When a spline joins a line, arc, or another curve, specify tangent directions to achieve a visually and geometrically smooth transition.
  • Work with control vertices when appropriate. The CV option creates a spline based on control vertices rather than fit points. The curve does not necessarily pass through every control vertex, but the vertices provide refined control over its overall form.
  • Keep splines on a dedicated layer. Smooth reference geometry is often construction geometry. A clearly named layer makes it easier to freeze, lock, or isolate splines during production work.

For editing, select the spline and use its grips to adjust fit points or control vertices directly. For more detailed control, use SPLINEDIT. This command can refine the spline, move fit data, modify tangency, convert the curve between fit-point and control-vertex representations, or reverse its direction. Reversing direction can be especially useful when a spline is used as a path for arrays, sweeps, or other direction-dependent operations.

A practical workflow is to first sketch the intended form with lightweight construction lines or arcs, then place spline points at key transitions: endpoints, high points, low points, and locations where the curve changes direction. Avoid adding points simply to force every minor variation. A clean spline should communicate a controlled design intent, not reproduce every temporary sketch mark.

Be aware that splines can be more demanding than polylines in large drawings, particularly when many are displayed or used in complex operations. If downstream software, CNC workflows, or consultants require simpler geometry, consider using SPLINEDIT to convert an approved spline to a polyline. Test the result carefully, since conversion uses a precision value and may introduce multiple segments.
