Bluebeam Tip: Bluebeam Revu Volume Measurements for Accurate Quantity Takeoffs

Volume measurements in Bluebeam Revu turn 2D plan areas into practical quantity data for concrete, excavation, fill, paving, and similar estimating tasks. A consistent calibration and clear markup setup are essential before relying on the totals.

Start by opening the drawing and confirming that the PDF scale is correct. Select the Volume measurement tool from the Measurements panel or toolbar, then trace the boundary of the area you need to quantify. Revu calculates the area and applies a depth value to produce the volume.

  • Calibrate first: Use a known dimension on the sheet to calibrate the page. Even a small scale error can significantly affect a large volume total.
  • Set the depth: After placing the volume markup, enter the required depth in the Properties panel. Revu uses the area multiplied by depth to calculate volume.
  • Confirm units: Match the measurement units to the estimating requirement, such as cubic feet, cubic yards, cubic meters, or liters. Convert only after verifying that both area and depth use compatible units.
  • Use custom tools: Save recurring volume markups to the Tool Chest with preset colors, subjects, labels, and depths. For example, create separate tools for 4-inch slab concrete, 6-inch base course, and 12-inch excavation.
  • Review in the Markups List: The Markups List provides a live record of volume measurements and totals. Sort or filter by Subject, Label, Space, or custom columns to separate materials and locations.
  • Account for exclusions: Trace openings, pits, penetrations, or other deductions separately so they can be clearly subtracted from the gross quantity.

For complex areas, zoom in closely and use Snap to Content when applicable to improve boundary accuracy. If a drawing contains multiple conditions, assign measurements to Spaces or use consistent Subjects so the data remains organized when exported.

A disciplined volume workflow makes takeoffs easier to audit and revise when drawings change. Explore Bluebeam Revu solutions, licensing options, and productivity tools through NOVEDGE’s Bluebeam collection, and use standardized Tool Chest items to keep every estimate consistent across the team.
