Bluebeam Tip: Bluebeam Dynamic Fill: Rapid, Accurate Takeoffs for Irregular Areas

Capture irregular rooms, slabs, and sitework in seconds with Dynamic Fill—turn messy edges into precise, scalable takeoffs without tracing.

  • Calibrate first: Use a known dimension to ensure every fill converts to accurate measurements.
  • Open Dynamic Fill: Tools > Measure > Dynamic Fill (or from the Measurements panel).
  • Select outputs before filling:
    • Area/Perimeter measurements for takeoffs
    • Spaces for room/zone management and navigation
    • Polylines/Polygons when you need editable geometry without measurement data
  • Close gaps with temporary Boundaries: Draw short segments across doorways or breaks so the fill doesn’t bleed into adjacent areas.
  • Exclude openings: Add Exclusions for shafts, cores, or islands you don’t want counted.
  • Click Fill on the target region; adjust Sensitivity and Gap Coverage to control how aggressively the fill reaches edges.
  • Apply to generate markups; they inherit your tool’s properties (color, hatch, layer, subject, tolerance).
  • Name Spaces immediately (Room, Level, Discipline) for clean reporting and navigation in the Spaces panel.

Pro tips

  • Standardize results: Preconfigure a measurement tool (units, hatch pattern, opacity, label, layer) and select it before applying Dynamic Fill so every output is consistent.
  • Compute volume: After creating an Area, add Depth in Properties to auto-calc Volume in the Markups List.
  • Control precision: Snap to geometry and keep Gap Coverage small; use Boundary lines rather than high Sensitivity to avoid spillover.
  • Segment complex shapes: Use multiple seeds and exclusions to isolate wings, alcoves, or jogs—then Apply once.
  • QA quickly: Compare the resulting Perimeter against known dimensions, and color-code by trade or phase using Layers.
  • Reuse settings: Save your configured measurement as a Tool Chest item for repeatable fills across projects.
  • Report fast: Filter by Subject/Layer in the Markups List and export CSV for estimating.
