Speed up sheet production by freezing layers per viewport with the LAYFRZ command—clear, disciplined views without duplicating geometry.
Why use LAYFRZ in viewports
- Show only what each sheet needs (e.g., architectural vs. MEP) without creating extra drawings.
- Reduce visual clutter and plotting errors by hiding nonessential layers in specific viewports.
- Improve layout performance by removing heavy xref layers from display in targeted viewports.
Fast workflow (per-viewport freeze)
- On a layout, double‑click inside the target viewport to make it active.
- Type LAYFRZ and press Enter.
- Type S for Settings:
- Choose Viewports = Current (freeze only the active viewport).
- Choose Block selection = Entity to freeze the actual nested layer you click inside blocks/xrefs, not the block’s container layer.
- Click any object; its layer is instantly frozen in the current viewport only (VP Freeze).
- Repeat picks as needed; use Undo within the command to step back.
Power moves
- Freeze across multiple viewports: use VPLAYER to freeze/thaw layers by name in selected viewports—great for batch ops.
- Save and reuse: with LAYERSTATE, save states including Viewport Overrides; restore them on other sheets for instant consistency.
- Thaw quickly: run LAYTHW in a layout to thaw layers per viewport when you need to bring information back.
- Xref control: use LAYFRZ with Entity mode to target specific xref sublayers (xref|layer) instead of the whole xref’s parent layer.
Best practices
- Set VISRETAIN = 1 so xref layer overrides (including VP Freeze) persist after reloads.
- Avoid freezing critical layers like 0 or Defpoints to prevent unexpected behavior in annotations or blocks.
- Document viewport overrides: in Layer Properties Manager, VP overrides appear in blue—review before publishing.
- Combine with dimension/annotation standards so what you hide doesn’t affect required notes at scale.
Troubleshooting
- Nothing freezes? Ensure you are inside the viewport and that LAYFRZ Viewports setting is Current, not All.
- Wrong layer got frozen? Re-run LAYFRZ and set Block selection to Entity for nested picks, then thaw and try again.
- Overrides lost after xref updates? Confirm VISRETAIN is set to 1 before reloading xrefs.
Time-savers
- Create a command alias (e.g., LFZ) in your PGP to launch LAYFRZ faster.
- Pair with LAYISO during editing, then restore and finalize view control with LAYFRZ for publishing.
