Use Rhino’s Sweep1 command to create a surface by moving one or more profile curves along a single rail curve. It is an excellent tool for modeling handles, moldings, trims, rails, furniture details, tubing transitions, and controlled freeform forms.
A successful one-rail sweep begins with clean input geometry. The rail defines the overall path, while the section curves define the shape and size of the resulting surface along that path.
Rebuild, SimplifyCrv, or Check when the rail behaves unpredictably.Sweep1, use Dir to inspect the rail and section curves. Inconsistent directions can cause profiles to twist or flip. Use Flip in the command options when necessary.Run Sweep1, select the rail, then select section curves in their intended order. Rhino displays a preview and offers several important options. Taking a moment to review these settings can make the difference between a clean, editable surface and a difficult-to-repair result.
One of the most common Sweep1 problems is unexpected twisting. This usually comes from section curves that have different directions, incompatible seam locations, or inconsistent orientation. If you are sweeping closed profiles, such as circles or rounded rectangles, use Dir to align their seams before sweeping. A seam placed on a consistent side of every profile gives Rhino a more predictable transition.
For better surface quality, use only as many section curves as the design truly requires. Adding many profiles may seem safer, but it can create an overly complex surface with uneven isocurves. Start with essential sections at critical changes in shape, then add profiles only where more control is needed. Afterward, inspect the result with Zebra, EnvironmentMap, or CurvatureGraph to evaluate continuity and fairness.
If the final object must become a solid, sweep a closed section curve, then use Cap if the resulting surface has planar ends. Always verify the finished object with ShowEdges to identify naked edges before moving on to booleans, fillets, rendering, or export.
