AutoCAD Tip: Standardize DWGPROPS for Automated Title Blocks

DWGPROPS is your lever for consistent, searchable drawings and automated title blocks across a project.

Standardize these core properties in every file (and template):

  • Summary tab: Title, Subject, Author, Keywords, Comments
  • Hyperlink base: Project root path (drives relative Xrefs and hyperlinks)
  • Custom properties (name/value pairs): ProjectNumber, ProjectName, Client, Discipline, SheetNumber, SheetTitle, DrawnBy, CheckedBy, Revision, IssueDate, Status

Why it matters:

  • Searchable files: Windows Explorer and Autodesk Docs can filter by Title, Author, Keywords, and Custom properties.
  • Automated title blocks: Insert Fields that read DWGPROPS, eliminating manual edits and typos.
  • Clean PDFs: DWG to PDF drivers pull Title/Author/Keywords from DWGPROPS for professional deliverables.
  • Reliable links: Hyperlink base keeps Xrefs and URLs relative—fewer broken paths in eTransmit and cloud shares.

Implement in a template (recommended):

  • Start from a clean DWT. Run DWGPROPS and set Summary values and the Hyperlink base.
  • Create Custom properties using consistent, case-stable names (e.g., “ProjectNumber” not “project_number”).
  • Open your title border block, replace text with Fields:
    • Insert Field > Category: Document > Property: Title/Author/Custom
    • Select your Custom properties (e.g., ProjectNumber, SheetNumber)
  • Set FIELDEVAL to 31 so fields refresh on open/save/plot/eTransmit.
  • Save as a project template and distribute from a network location.

Batch update existing drawings (one-time catch-up):

  • Use the command-line version: -DWGPROPS to script Summary/Custom fields across folders.
  • Or automate with a short AutoLISP routine:
(vl-load-com)
(setq si (vla-get-SummaryInfo
            (vla-get-ActiveDocument (vlax-get-Acad-Object))))
(vla-put-Author si "YourCompany")
(vla-SetCustomByKey si "ProjectNumber" "24-017")
(vla-SetCustomByKey si "Discipline" "ARCH")
(setvar "FIELDEVAL" 31)
(command "_.REGEN")

Pro tips:

  • Lock naming: Publish a one-page metadata standard with exact property names and examples.
  • Use Sheet Sets in tandem: Sheet-set properties can complement DWGPROPS for sheet-specific fields.
  • QC quickly: Use the FIELD command’s “Evaluate” and the Properties palette to verify live values.
  • PDF sanity check: After plotting, inspect PDF metadata (Title/Author/Keywords) before issuing.
  • Hyperlink base best practice: Set to the project folder (not a deep subfolder) for robust relative paths.
