Drawing limits provide a simple way to define the intended working area of an AutoCAD drawing. Although modern AutoCAD model space is effectively unlimited, properly configured limits can still improve drafting discipline, support grid setup, and help prevent accidental geometry from being created far away from the actual project.
Use the LIMITS command early in a project—ideally immediately after selecting the correct template and setting drawing units. Think of limits as a practical rectangular boundary for the extents of your design area, not as a replacement for layouts, viewports, or plot settings.
For example, if you are drafting an architectural floor plan in millimeters and want a working area of 30 m by 20 m, you could set the lower-left limit to 0,0 and the upper-right limit to 30000,20000. For a small mechanical component drawn in inches, the upper-right value might instead be 12,8. The key is that your limits must match the units established with the UNITS command.
A common mistake is setting limits for a paper size while drafting full-size geometry in model space. For instance, an A3 sheet is 420 × 297 mm, but a building, site, or fabricated part may be much larger than that. In most workflows, draw real-world objects at full size in model space and use a layout viewport to control the plotted scale. Set limits around the expected model extents—not around the physical sheet size—unless you are intentionally drafting a sheet-sized detail.
Drawing limits become especially useful when paired with the grid. After setting limits, configure a sensible grid spacing with DSETTINGS or the status bar controls. A grid that reflects the working area can make visual orientation easier, particularly for schematic, site, or detail drafting.
For team standards, include appropriate limits in your company template so every new drawing begins with a consistent coordinate origin and working envelope. This is particularly helpful when drawings must align with survey coordinates, standardized title-block origins, or downstream exports.
