Use Visual Styles and Shading Modes to control clarity, speed, and presentation without changing your geometry.
Access and control
- Open the Visual Styles palette: type VISUALSTYLES.
- Set the current style quickly: VSCURRENT or SHADEMODE.
- Per-viewport control: select a viewport, open the Properties palette (Ctrl+1), and set its Visual Style and Shade Plot.
- Save with Views: use VIEW to store named views that remember a Visual Style for fast switching.
Pick the right style for the task
- 2D Wireframe: fastest editing and drafting; ideal for heavy drawings and precision snaps.
- 3D Wireframe: reveals structure and alignment across layers and overlapping solids.
- Hidden: quick depth check; removes back edges for cleaner review and plotting.
- Shaded / Shaded with Edges: great for design reviews; edges emphasize form and intersections.
- Conceptual: stylized shading and edges for early design communication.
- Realistic: displays materials, textures, and lights for near-render previews.
- X-ray: semi-transparent faces simplify part selection and internal alignment checks.
- Shades of Gray: neutral tone for less visual noise during coordination sessions.
- Sketchy: adds jitter/overhang for hand-drawn presentation effects.
Tune for clarity
- Edges: toggle “Show/Hide Occluded Edges,” choose color/linetype to reveal hidden geometry without clutter.
- Silhouettes: thicken object outlines to separate parts in dense assemblies.
- Faces: enable/disable Materials, Textures, and Shadows to balance realism with speed.
- Sketch effects: adjust Jitter and Overhang only as needed—subtlety beats gimmicks.
Speed and stability tips
- Use 2D/3D Wireframe while modeling; switch to Shaded/Realistic only for checks or screenshots.
- Per-viewport styles: keep plan/section viewports in Hidden, perspective in Shaded with Edges.
- Disable Shadows and Textures during navigation; re-enable for output.
- Graphics: turn on hardware acceleration and smooth line display via GRAPHICSCONFIG for better orbit/pan.
Clean plotting with visual styles
- In Layouts, set viewport Shade Plot to “As Displayed” or a specific style for predictable results.
- Hidden style is reliable for crisp construction docs without full rendering overhead.
- For photoreal output, use Render workflows; Visual Styles are for real-time display and fast plotting.
Workflow boosters
- Create a few office-standard styles (e.g., “Coordination – X-ray,” “Presentation – Shaded+Edges”) and store them in your template.
- Pair named views with styles for one-click switches during reviews and screen shares.
- Publish sets with consistent viewport styles for on-brand deliverables.
