AutoCAD Tip: Export layered, measurement-ready PDFs from AutoCAD

Export PDFs that let clients toggle layers, measure accurately, and review cleanly—without giving away your DWG.

Core setup for layered PDFs (once, then reuse):

  • In PLOT, choose “DWG To PDF.pc3.” Click Properties > Custom Properties:
    • Enable “Include layer information.”
    • Enable “Include hyperlinks” if you use URL or sheet references.
    • Set Merge Control to “Lines merge” for clean overlaps in prints and markups.
    • Vector quality: 600–1200 dpi for linework; Raster image quality: High only if you rely on shaded views or images.
    • Transparency: enable only when necessary; it can increase file size and rasterize content.
  • Save these settings to a named Page Setup. Store it in your template (DWT) so the whole team is consistent. If you need help standardizing office templates, talk to NOVEDGE.

Layer control best practices before export:

  • Decide what should be togglable in the PDF. Freeze or turn Off any layer you don’t want to appear at all. If a layer has no plotted objects, it won’t show in the PDF’s layer list.
  • Use VPLAYER for viewport-specific layer visibility. Note: PDF layers apply to the whole page; viewers don’t respect per-viewport differences when toggling.
  • Group logically: Xref layers appear under the Xref name, which can make PDFs easier to navigate. Keep Xrefs named cleanly.
  • Use Layer States to rapidly set “Publish” conditions; restore the state just before plotting.
  • Avoid SHX fonts if you need searchable PDFs—use TrueType fonts so text exports as actual text.

Workflow that scales to sets:

  • Clean first: PURGE, -PURGE RegApps, and OVERKILL to cut file size and speed plotting.
  • Apply your Page Setup on each layout. For multi-sheet deliverables, use PUBLISH with “DWG To PDF.pc3” and a single multi-page file.
  • Bookmarks: If enabled in the PDF driver, layout names (or Sheet Set titles) become bookmarks—use consistent naming. Sheet Set Manager can automate this.
  • Check results in a layer-aware viewer (Acrobat, Bluebeam). Toggle layers to confirm the expected behavior before sending.

Quality, size, and performance tips:

  • Keep vector output whenever possible. Heavy transparency, gradients, and raster images push the driver toward rasterization and large files.
  • If lineweights look too bold in PDFs, verify plot style scales and that “Plot object lineweights” is set appropriately.
  • For shaded views, use moderate raster DPI (300–450) for a balance between clarity and size.
  • Use named plot styles (STB) or well-curated CTBs to maintain consistent lineweight logic across the office.

Hand-off tips:

  • Communicate to recipients that the PDF supports layer toggling and recommend a compatible viewer.
  • Archive your PC3 and plot styles with the project so future revisions export identically. CAD managers: consider packaging standards via eTransmit.
