AutoCAD Tip: Customize the AutoCAD Quick Access Toolbar for Faster Workflows

Make your go-to commands one click away by tuning the Quick Access Toolbar (QAT).

Why the QAT matters

  • It’s always visible, regardless of ribbon tab, minimizing mouse travel and context switching.
  • Customizations follow your workspace, so your favorites are consistent across sessions.
  • Ideal for commands you use dozens of times a day but hate hunting for on the ribbon.

Set it up fast

  • Right‑click any ribbon button or palette command > Add to Quick Access Toolbar.
  • Right‑click the QAT > Show Below/Above the Ribbon to match your screen layout.
  • Right‑click the QAT > Customize to:
    • Reorder items with drag‑and‑drop and add separators to group related tools.
    • Reset to default if you need a clean slate.
  • For deeper control, run CUI:
    • In the Customizations tree, expand Quick Access Toolbars under your workspace.
    • From All Commands, drag commands (or custom macros) into the QAT.
    • Assign meaningful tooltips and choose small/large icons for clarity.

Recommended favorites (start with 6–12 essentials)

  • Core drafting
    • Line, Polyline, Rectangle, Circle.
    • Trim/Extend, Fillet/Chamfer, Stretch.
    • Match Properties (MATCHPROP) and Quick Select (QSELECT).
  • Layer control
    • Layer Properties, Make Object’s Layer Current (LAYMCUR).
    • Isolate/Unisolate (LAYISO/LAYUNISO) and Layer Merge (LAYMRG).
  • Annotation and plotting
    • Dimension (DIM), Multileader (MLEADER), Text (MTEXT).
    • Page Setup Manager, Plot, Publish.
    • Annotative Scale drop‑down if you change scales frequently.
  • Quality and collaboration
    • Overkill (clean geometry), Purge, Audit.
    • External References (XREF), DWG Compare.
    • eTransmit for clean project handoff.

Power‑user ideas

  • Group by task with separators: Drafting | Layers | Annotate | Plot | Manage.
  • Add “Toggle” commands you want at a glance:
    • Ortho Mode, Polar Tracking, Object Snap, Selection Cycling, Transparency.
  • Create custom macros (CUI > New Command) for multi‑step routines, e.g.:
    • Clean: ^C^C-PURGE ALL; -PURGE REGAPPS; -OVERKILL
    • Layer isolate with fade: ^C^C-LAYISO;SETTINGS;FADE;60;N
  • Keep icons compact. The QAT works best as a concise, muscle‑memory row—not a second ribbon.

Save, back up, and share

  • Save your Workspace after editing the QAT so changes persist.
  • Use CUI > Transfer to copy QAT elements between CUIX files for teammates.
  • Export an Options Profile as a lightweight way to bundle UI settings.

Troubleshooting

  • If icons vanish, confirm you’re in the intended Workspace and that VISRETAIN/UI profiles haven’t changed.
  • If a command won’t toggle, add its specific “Toggle” variant from All Commands instead of a plain alias.
  • Reset the QAT if corruption is suspected, then re‑import from your backup CUIX.
