ZBrush Tip: Inflate Brush Workflow for Rapid Volume Restoration

Inflate is your fastest path to restoring form and pushing bold, stylized volume without destroying surface intent.

  • Core idea: the Inflate brush pushes vertices outward along their normals, recovering thickness after aggressive smoothing or remeshing.
  • Use cases: plump stylized anatomy, restore eyelids/lips, add cushion to folds, round bevels on hard-surface edges, and thicken for print-readiness.

Essential setup

  • Brush choice: B + I to access Inflate. For fabric work, try ClothInflate for tension-aware volume.
  • Control radius: keep Draw Size moderate; Inflate scales strongly with brush size, so work up in passes.
  • Protect thin shells: enable Brush > Auto Masking > BackfaceMask to avoid inflating through the mesh.
  • Isolate by topology: enable Topological in Auto Masking when working on fingers, straps, or separate shells.

Precision and control

  • Directional control: hold Alt to deflate (invert effect) for fast push-pull sculpting.
  • Depth management: adjust Brush > Depth > Imbed to keep inflation closer to the surface and reduce artifacts.
  • Smoothing strategy: after an Inflate pass, lightly Smooth to unify surfaces without collapsing regained volume. Use lower Smooth intensity if form is delicate.
  • Alpha-driven puff: load a soft alpha to broaden volume gain; switch to a sharper alpha to balloon creases selectively.

Masking-driven volume

  • Selective puff: mask areas to protect, then Tool > Deformation > Inflate to expand only the unmasked regions uniformly.
  • Edge seams: create a narrow mask strip, Blur once, then Inflate for clean, raised seams; follow with Pinch to tighten the breakline.

Stylization workflows

  • Character forms: Inflate cheeks, forearms, and calves in layered passes to achieve appealing graphic silhouettes before micro-detailing.
  • Cloth and leather: inflate broad folds, then refine planes with HPolish or TrimDynamic to balance soft mass and crisp edges.
  • Hard-surface rounding: a gentle Inflate pass along chamfers softens overly razor edges to a more physical, manufacturable radius.

Topology and performance

  • Dynamic tessellation: with Sculptris Pro, use small Inflate strokes to add volume locally; disable it once forms are set to maintain stability.
  • Post-fix: if thin areas self-intersect, use Dynamesh with a suitable resolution and Polish (low) to re-normalize, then Project details back if needed.

3D print readiness

  • Wall thickness: a mild Deformation > Inflate can globally thicken models; verify thickness with test sections before export via 3D Print Hub.

Pro tips

  • Store a Morph Target, inflate boldly, then paint back subtleties with the Morph brush.
  • Combine Inflate with Mask By Cavity to accentuate wear-prone edges non-destructively.
  • Iterate in stages: volume (Inflate), plane cleanup (HPolish), edge accent (Pinch), micro detail (Alphas/Noise).
