AutoCAD Tip: Automate Title Blocks, Labels, and Tables with AutoCAD Fields

Stop retyping data in AutoCAD. Fields let text, attributes, leaders, and tables read live properties from your drawing and update automatically.

Where Fields shine:

  • Title blocks and plot stamps (file name, layout, plot date, revision)
  • Sheet Set Manager data (sheet number, sheet title, project, issuer)
  • Object-driven labels (area, length, elevation, coordinates)
  • Tables and schedules that reflect current model values

How to insert a Field (fast):

  • Type FIELD, or in MText/MLeader/Table, right‑click > Insert Field.
  • Pick a Category:
    • Document: FileName, FilePath, CreateDate, SaveDate, LayoutName, LoginName
    • Objects: Length, Area, Elevation (select an object)
    • Plot: PlotDate, PlotDevice, PaperSize
    • SheetSet: CurrentSheetNumber, CurrentSheetTitle, custom project properties
  • Use Additional Format to set units, precision, case, prefix/suffix (e.g., “ SF”).

Automate title blocks the right way:

  • Build attributes with ATTDEF; in the Default value, Insert Field rather than static text.
  • For single drawings, drive fields from DWGPROPS (Summary/Custom) for Project, Client, Revision.
  • For multi-sheet projects, use Sheet Set fields (SSM) so numbering and titles stay synchronized.
  • After editing a block definition, run ATTSYNC to push changes into placed blocks.
  • Save your smart title block in a DWT template so every new drawing is automated from the start.

Live object labels that stay correct:

  • Areas: Draw a closed polyline > MText > Field > Objects > Area > select polyline > format to Architectural or Decimal and add “ SF”. The value updates when you edit the polyline.
  • Lengths: Label curb runs or centerlines the same way with the Length property.
  • Coordinates: Use the Object or DIESEL options to display insertion point coordinates for markers.

Control updates and display:

  • Set FIELDEVAL to update when you need (common choice: 31 to update on open, save, plot, eTransmit, and regen).
  • Force-refresh with UPDATEFIELD or REGENALL.
  • FIELDDISPLAY toggles gray backgrounds (for screen only; backgrounds don’t plot).

Pro tips:

  • Combine fields with text: “Sheet ” + CurrentSheetNumber + “ – ” + CurrentSheetTitle.
  • Plot stamps: Place a small attributed block with fields (PlotDate, LoginName, FileName) on a non‑printing layer in model space viewports, or in paper space outside the border.
  • Avoid EXPLODE on annotations with fields; it converts them to static text and breaks automation.
  • Keep properties centralized: use SSM for teams; use DWGPROPS for solo work or quick jobs.
  • Store standard fielded title blocks and notes on Tool Palettes for one‑click reuse.

Adopting fields trims rework, prevents typos, and keeps deliverables consistent across sheets and phases. For licenses, add‑ons, and expert guidance, check NOVEDGE.
