AutoCAD Tip: AutoCAD Object Isolation: Hide/Unhide to Reduce Visual Noise

When drawings get visually noisy, use AutoCAD’s Hide/Unhide (Object Isolation) to focus without altering layers or deleting geometry. If you’re standardizing workflows or licenses, NOVEDGE can help your team stay efficient with the right AutoCAD setup.

Core tools

  • HIDEOBJECTS: Temporarily hides selected objects.
  • ISOLATEOBJECTS: Shows only selected objects; hides everything else.
  • UNISOLATEOBJECTS: Ends isolation/hide and restores display.
  • OBJECTISOLATIONMODE: Controls persistence of isolation across sessions:
    • 0 = Clears isolation when you end the command or close the drawing
    • 1 = Persists isolation until you explicitly restore
  • Status Bar: The Isolate bulb icon indicates hidden/isolated objects; click it to restore quickly.

Fast workflow

  1. Hide a distraction:
    • Select objects, right-click > Isolate > Hide Objects, or run HIDEOBJECTS.
    • Continue working with a cleaner view; selection and snaps ignore hidden objects.
  2. Focus narrowly:
    • Select target objects, right-click > Isolate > Isolate Objects, or run ISOLATEOBJECTS.
    • Everything else is hidden, ideal for detailing and QA checks.
  3. Restore visibility:
    • Click the Isolate icon on the Status Bar or run UNISOLATEOBJECTS.

Best practices

  • Use Hide/Unhide for short, task-focused sessions; prefer layer-based controls for sheet-specific plotting.
  • Combine with smart selection:
    • QSELECT or FILTER to target by layer, color, or type
    • SELECTSIMILAR to grab like objects fast
  • Before large hides, save a view (VIEW) or snapshot layer states to backtrack quickly.
  • Minimize team surprises:
    • Set OBJECTISOLATIONMODE to 0 if you don’t want hidden states to persist across saves.
    • Always end isolation before publishing or handing off drawings.
  • Performance tip: Hiding dense geometry can speed navigation and reduce selection lag on heavy XREF scenes.
  • Create quick aliases in PGP/CUI for speed (e.g., HI = HIDEOBJECTS, ISO = ISOLATEOBJECTS, UI = UNISOLATEOBJECTS).

Troubleshooting

  • Can’t find objects? Look for the Isolate icon on the Status Bar and run UNISOLATEOBJECTS.
  • If display seems stuck, try REGEN or REGENALL.
  • Verify existence/ownership with LAYERWALK and the Properties palette before assuming deletion.

When to use layers instead

  • For sheet-by-sheet control and plotting consistency, rely on viewport layer overrides (VP Freeze) and Layer States.
  • Reserve Hide/Unhide for temporary edits, reviews, and targeted modeling sessions.
