AutoCAD Tip: AutoCAD Layer Audit and Reporting Workflows

Use Layer Reports to audit and document how layers are defined and actually used in your DWGs—essential for standards compliance, QA, and clean handoffs.

Workflow A — Fast, text-based Layer report (no setup)

  • Set LOGFILEMODE to 1 to capture the session to a log file (type LOGFILEMODE, enter 1).
  • Run the command-line Layer manager: type -LAYER (note the leading dash).
  • Enter ? then * to list every layer and its properties (on/off, freeze, lock, color, linetype, plot state, etc.).
  • Press F2 to open the text window and copy the listing, or retrieve the session log from your temp folder.
  • Set LOGFILEMODE back to 0 when finished.

This creates an immediate, tamper-evident snapshot you can attach to submittals or archive for version-to-version comparison. For licensing, upgrades, or expert guidance on AutoCAD, visit NOVEDGE.

Workflow B — Quantitative Layer usage report (counts, tables, exportable)

  • Launch DATAEXTRACTION to open the wizard.
  • Create a new DXE, select your current drawing (or a folder for multi-file audit).
  • Choose objects “from the drawing” and include the Layer property (also consider Object Type).
  • On the refine page, group by Layer and enable Count to tally objects per layer.
  • Output to:
    • Drawing table for internal review, and/or
    • External file (CSV/XLS) for stakeholders and audits.
  • Save the DXE template so you can re-run reports with one click on future projects.

Tip: Export the table and add it to your transmittal package. If you need AutoCAD add-ons or cross-discipline solutions, check NOVEDGE for curated toolsets.

Optional helpers for cleaner, more meaningful reports

  • LAYWALK to visually audit layer contents and quickly find empty or misused layers.
  • QSELECT or FILTER to isolate objects on suspect layers before running your report.
  • Layer States Manager to capture before/after visibility scenarios alongside the report.
  • CHECKSTANDARDS with a DWS file to validate layer names, colors, and plot styles.

What to look for in the report

  • Empty or near-empty layers (consider merging with LAYMRG or removing after review).
  • Non-plot layers that contain plotted geometry (fix plot flags or move objects).
  • Off/Frozen layers with critical content (investigate discipline handoffs and Xrefs).
  • Color/linetype anomalies that break office standards.

Best practices

  • Archive a layer report at key milestones (30/60/90/IFC) for traceability.
  • Pair the report with a published CTB/STB list and a saved LAS (layer state) file.
  • Standardize layer naming and descriptions to make reports self-explanatory.
  • Include the CSV/XLS in your BIM/CAD Execution Plan package.
