AutoCAD Tip: Annotative Blocks for Consistent Symbol Sizing

Keep symbols readable at any scale with Annotative Blocks. They automatically size themselves to match the current annotation scale so your north arrows, section markers, and symbols plot consistently across viewports.

What Annotative Blocks solve:

  • Uniform plotted size of symbols, regardless of model scale.
  • Clean, legible sheets with fewer viewport-specific overrides.
  • Faster sheet setup and fewer surprises at plot time.

How to create an Annotative Block:

  • Draw the symbol at its intended plotted size. For example, plan for a 2.5 text height or a 10 unit symbol height that represents how big it should appear on paper.
  • Use the BLOCK command. In the Block Definition dialog:
    • Check Annotative to enable annotation scaling for the block.
    • Set a logical base point for consistent placement.
  • If the block includes attributes, set their text height to the intended plotted height and keep the text style height at 0 so it scales correctly.

Using Annotative Blocks in production:

  • Before inserting, set CANNOSCALE to the desired annotation scale on the status bar.
  • Insert the block; it will display at the correct paper size for the current scale.
  • In Paper Space, set the viewport scale, lock the viewport, and the block will read correctly in every viewport that shares its scales.
  • Need more scales? Select the block and use OBJECTSCALE (Add/Delete Scales) to attach additional scales without re-inserting.
  • Turn on ANNOAUTOSCALE if you want AutoCAD to add the current scale to newly placed annotative objects automatically.

Converting existing blocks:

  • Redefine with BLOCK: choose the block name, enable Annotative, and overwrite the definition.
  • If instances were placed earlier, add the needed scales with OBJECTSCALE and use ANNOUPDATE if positioning looks off after scale changes.

Best practices and troubleshooting:

  • Keep scale lists tidy with SCALELISTEDIT to prevent bloated drawings and slow regen.
  • If annotative objects vanish in some views, set ANNOALLVISIBLE temporarily to see all scales, then reconcile which scales to keep.
  • Use SELECTIONANNODISPLAY to preview how objects would look at other scales during selection.
  • Avoid EXPLODE; it strips the annotative behavior and creates scale-specific geometry.
  • For dynamic blocks, test stretch/visibility actions at multiple scales to ensure grips and parameters behave consistently.
  • Standardize symbol sizes (e.g., 2.0, 2.5, 3.5 text heights) in your CAD template so teams apply consistent annotative content.

When to use non-annotative blocks instead:

  • Model items that must scale with the real-world geometry (e.g., doors, fixtures) rather than remain paper-sized.
