ZBrush Tip: ZModeler Polygon Insets for Clean Hard-Surface Panels

Polygon insets are essential for creating panels, vents, recesses, frames, and controlled support geometry. ZModeler makes the operation fast, but clean results depend on selecting the correct target and maintaining predictable topology.

Begin with a low-density PolyMesh3D and activate the ZModeler Brush by pressing B, Z, then M. Hover over a polygon face and press the Spacebar to open the ZModeler context menu. Under Polygon Actions, choose Inset.

  • Polygon: Insets only the face beneath the cursor. Use this for isolated mechanical details.
  • Polygroup All: Insets the complete Polygroup as one region, making it ideal for control panels and larger recessed sections.
  • Polygroup Island: Affects only the connected island belonging to the selected Polygroup. This is useful when the same Polygroup appears in several disconnected locations.

Click the target polygon and drag to define the inset width. Watch the new border rather than the cursor distance: your objective is a visually consistent frame with no crossed edges or collapsed corners. For greater control, zoom close to the surface and use a short, deliberate drag. Holding Shift after beginning certain ZModeler operations can help access stepped or constrained behavior, depending on the active modifier and ZBrush version.

For a clean hard-surface panel, use this practical sequence:

  1. Create a dedicated Polygroup for the panel area.
  2. Apply Inset with Polygroup All so the selected faces behave as one continuous region.
  3. Inspect the corners for narrow polygons, overlaps, or unexpected diagonal connections.
  4. Use QMesh or Extrude on the inset region to push it inward or raise it above the surrounding surface.
  5. Assign the inset faces a new Polygroup if they will need additional operations.
  6. Add bevels, creases, or support loops only after the overall panel proportions are approved.

Key tip: Do not inset every face independently when you need one continuous panel. Individual insets generate separate borders around each polygon, producing a tiled pattern. Select a region-based target to create a unified inner surface and a single surrounding frame.

Test the result with Dynamic Subdivision. If the border pinches, the inset may be too narrow, the corners may contain uneven topology, or the underlying surface may be too distorted. Correct the base geometry before adding small details. On curved objects, keep the inset modest; an aggressive inset can compress polygons and disrupt the original curvature.

  • Keep panel Polygroups simple and contiguous.
  • Work at low polygon density whenever possible.
  • Check the model from oblique angles, not only from the front.
  • Repeat identical insets using symmetry or duplicated geometry rather than estimating each one manually.
  • Save an incremental version before complex ZModeler edits.
