ZBrush Tip: ZBrush Snapshot: Rapid Side‑by‑Side Variant Evaluation

Quickly evaluate variations with ZBrush’s Snapshot to make objective, side‑by‑side design calls without duplicating geometry or breaking your flow.

What Snapshot does

  • Press Shift+S (or use Transform > Snapshot) to “stamp” a 2.5D copy of your current model on the canvas at the exact view, material, and lighting.
  • Continue editing the live Tool while the stamped versions remain for visual comparison.
  • Ideal for silhouette checks, proportion tweaks, facial expression options, bevel/fillet tests, and surface finish explorations.

Set up for fair comparisons

  • Pick a neutral material (MatCap Gray or SkinShade4) and keep lighting consistent. Snapshots bake shading—set it first.
  • Decide on Perspective on/off and stick to it for all takes. Maintain a consistent Angle of View.
  • If you use the Universal Camera, store/recall the same view so each Snapshot shares identical framing.

Core workflow

  • Refine your model to a milestone (e.g., new nose width, alternate panel chamfer).
  • Press Shift+S to drop a Snapshot on the canvas.
  • Adjust the live sculpt (use a Layer or duplicate SubTool if you want a reversible branch).
  • Repeat Shift+S for each iteration. Arrange the camera to place variants in a neat grid if desired.

Manage Snapshots with Document Layers

  • Open Document > Layers and Add a layer before snapping each variant.
  • Rename layers (A, B, C…) to match the iteration.
  • Toggle layer visibility to A/B quickly; Clear a layer to remove a specific take without nuking the rest.
  • Export the canvas (Document > Export) to share a clean contact sheet with your team or clients.

Pro tips for clarity

  • Use AA Half for a crisp, anti‑aliased view of fine differences.
  • Switch to Flat Color to judge silhouette only; revert to your neutral MatCap for form read.
  • When testing microdetails, temporarily raise SubDiv or enable HD Geometry on the live sculpt so what you Snapshot reflects the intended fidelity.
  • For 3D, movable side‑by‑side comps, duplicate the SubTool instead of snapping, offset with Gizmo 3D, and use Solo/Visibility sets to compare.

Cleanup and safety

  • Ctrl+N clears all 2.5D Snapshots from the canvas when you’re done. Save your Tool/Project first.
  • Remember: Snapshots are 2.5D. Changing materials or lights after snapping won’t update previous takes—lock those choices early.
