ZBrush Tip: ZBrush OBJ/FBX Export Best Practices

Exporting high‑res meshes from ZBrush to OBJ/FBX is about predictability: clean scale, intact UVs, correct point order, and dependable shading in the target app.

  • Decide the deliverable first
    • Hero static geometry (VFX/film): export the highest practical SDiv or a decimated version that preserves UVs.
    • Game/real‑time: export mid/low SDiv and bake details to normal/displacement with Multi Map Exporter (MME).
    • 3D printing: OBJ at print scale, watertight, with welded seams (or use 3D Print Hub for STL).
  • Scale and units you can trust
    • Use Zplugin > Scale Master to set real‑world size (mm/cm/m) and apply before export.
    • For FBX, set an explicit scale factor in Zplugin > FBX ExportImport so size round‑trips correctly.
    • A quick sanity check: re‑import your export into a new Tool; the bounding box and brush size should feel identical.
  • Topology, UVs, and color
    • Run Tool > Geometry > Mesh Integrity > Check Mesh Integrity. Fix issues before export.
    • Ensure UVs exist if you’ll render maps. If needed, unwrap with UV Master (enable Control Painting for seams).
    • Polypaint: convert to texture (Tool > Texture Map > Create > New From Polypaint) before OBJ export. FBX can include vertex color (enable Color/Polypaint in the FBX plugin).
  • Subdivision and density strategy
    • If the destination can’t handle extreme polycounts, duplicate the Tool and run Decimation Master with “Keep UVs.”
    • For displacement workflows, export a mid SDiv mesh and 32‑bit EXR displacement (MME). Keep Tangent normal maps for game engines.
  • OBJ export settings (Tool > Export)
    • Txr ON to write UVs, Grp ON to preserve Polygroups as OBJ groups.
    • Mrg OFF to preserve point order for blendshapes; ON if you need welded seams (e.g., print).
    • Choose Quads or Tri based on the target. Many engines prefer triangulated meshes.
  • FBX export settings (Zplugin > FBX ExportImport)
    • Export All Visible to keep SubTools as separate FBX nodes with their names.
    • Enable Triangulate if your target requires it; set Up Axis to match the DCC/engine (Y‑Up for Maya/Unreal, Z‑Up for 3ds Max).
    • Enable Normals and (optionally) Tangents/Bitangents for consistent shading downstream.
  • Maps and UDIMs via Multi Map Exporter
    • Normals: Tangent ON; flip G for DirectX (Unreal), leave G for OpenGL (Maya). 16‑bit TIFF/PNG is fine for normals.
    • Displacement: 32‑bit EXR for film; set Mid (0.5) and Scale per renderer; SmoothUV to match target subdivision.
    • UDIMs: enable UDIM tile naming in MME for multi‑tile textures.
  • Verify and troubleshoot
    • Re‑import to ZBrush or your DCC: check scale, orientation, normals, and UV continuity.
    • If shading artifacts appear, ensure vertex order wasn’t altered (keep Mrg OFF) and that normals/tangents are imported or recomputed consistently.
