Normal maps transfer high-resolution sculpted detail onto a lighter, production-ready mesh. A clean result depends on preparing subdivision levels, UVs, and export settings before generating the texture.
Prepare the model first:
Create the normal map:
When processing finishes, inspect the thumbnail in the Normal Map palette. Click Clone NM to copy the result into the Texture palette, then choose Texture > Export. PNG, TIFF, or TGA are dependable formats; avoid lossy compression because it can introduce shading noise.
Prevent common baking problems:
Always test the exported map on the actual low-resolution asset inside the destination renderer. Use a neutral material and a strong side light to reveal seams, gradients, and channel errors. Do not judge a normal map only by its RGB appearance; evaluate the lighting response on the model.
For multiple SubTools or several texture types, Multi Map Exporter can automate production, but first validate one map manually. This establishes the correct UV smoothing, channel orientation, and tangent settings for the pipeline.
