ZBrush Tip: TrimDynamic: Planar Blocking and Hard-Surface Refinement

TrimDynamic is a fast, reliable way to carve clean, planar facets and break noisy forms into readable hard-surface volumes. Use it early for concept blocking and again during refinement to introduce purposeful bevels and highlights.

  • When to choose TrimDynamic
    • Concepting hard-surface: squash bumps into crisp planes quickly.
    • Stylization: introduce deliberate faceting without over-polishing.
    • Prep for panel cuts: establish flat grounds before Slice/Panel Loops.
    • Use HPolish later when you need tighter plane continuity and straighter borders.
  • Core setup (repeatable recipe)
    • Select Brush > TrimDynamic (quick find: press B, then start typing “trim”).
    • Focal Shift: -100 for a square, decisive contact patch.
    • Z Intensity: 20–40 for confident planarization; 5–15 for subtle nudges.
    • Brush > AutoMasking > BackfaceMasking: On (essential on thin shells).
    • Brush > Auto Smooth: 8–20 to reduce chatter as you plane.
    • Stroke > LazyMouse: On (L), LazyRadius: 20–40, LazySmooth: ~8 for stability.
    • Brush > Depth > Imbed: 0 to -5 to control how aggressively you “bite” into the surface.
    • Alpha: Off (default) for a neutral, predictable footprint; try a square alpha for harder edges.
  • Practical workflow
    • Block volume with Dynamesh or Sculptris Pro at a density that prevents lumpy planes.
    • TrimDynamic from stable camera angles; keep passes long and confident.
    • Protect borders: Mask by Cavity before planing to retain crisp panel edges.
    • Unify facets: Deformation > Polish by Features (low values 1–3) after trimming.
    • Refine: Switch to HPolish for late-stage straightening and tight bevel reads.
    • Topology pass: ZRemesher once the planes read well, then Project All to retain form.
  • Control and consistency tips
    • Maintain a plane: work from the same camera view when revisiting a face.
    • Invert behavior with Alt to push vs. shave; use it to “build out” a plane before equalizing.
    • Edge safety: enable BackfaceMasking and reduce Imbed near thin lips or vents.
    • Noisy surfaces: raise mesh resolution or subdivide once before trimming.
  • Troubleshooting
    • Chatter or stepping: increase LazySmooth, lower Z Intensity, or slightly increase Auto Smooth.
    • Dents punching through: BackfaceMasking On; reduce Imbed; approach at a shallower angle.
    • Loss of definition after polish: use lower Polish by Features and re-pass with TrimDynamic.
  • Speed and repeatability
    • Assign a hotkey to TrimDynamic and save the brush preset (Brush > Save As) for your studio defaults.
    • Pair with SliceCurve or ZModeler creasing after planes are set for production-ready edges.
    • Finish with subtle Pinch along plane intersections to sharpen the light break.

Pro tip: Treat TrimDynamic as “intent made visible.” Every pass should clarify silhouette and light. If a stroke doesn’t improve read from 3–5 meters, undo and re-aim.
