Systematic SubTool naming turns a crowded ZBrush project into a structure that is faster to navigate, edit, export, and hand off. Rename components as soon as their purpose becomes clear instead of waiting until the sculpt is finished.
To rename an item, select it in the Tool > SubTool palette, click Rename, enter the new name, and confirm. A practical naming convention should communicate what the SubTool is, where it belongs, and—when relevant—which version or side it represents.
Head_Eyes, Armor_ChestPlate, or Weapon_Grip._L and _R. Avoid mixing “Left,” “LT,” and “L” in the same project._Blockout, _High, _Low, _Retopo, and _Export make each mesh’s role immediately visible.Strap_01, Strap_02, and Strap_03.A readable pattern might be:
Character_Region_Component_Side_Status
Examples include Hero_Head_Eye_L_High, Hero_Armor_Pauldron_R_Final, and Drone_Body_Panel_03_Low. You do not need every field for every SubTool; use only the information that helps distinguish one mesh from another.
Keep names concise. Long descriptions are difficult to scan in a narrow SubTool list, while vague labels such as Object1, Copy, or NewTool provide no production value. If you duplicate a SubTool, rename the duplicate immediately. This prevents chains such as “Helmet Copy 1 Copy 2” from accumulating during rapid design exploration.
For larger projects, combine naming with SubTool folders. A folder named Armor can contain Chest_Main, Pauldron_L, and Pauldron_R. Folder structure provides broad organization, while systematic names preserve clarity when components are moved, merged, exported, or delivered separately.
Tip: perform a quick naming pass before every milestone. Clear SubTool names reduce selection mistakes, simplify collaboration, and make exported assets easier to identify in rendering, animation, and game-development tools.
