Use Spotlight to project textures and alphas directly onto your sculpt for rapid, high-fidelity surfacing and paint. It’s fast, precise, and perfect for photo-based detail transfer.
Why Spotlight
- Project color (Polypaint) and depth (with ZAdd/ZSub) from images.
- Non-destructive: reposition, scale, rotate, and tile references before committing.
- Great for photoreal skin, fabrics, decals, logos, and micro detail from alphas.
Quick setup
- Texture palette > Import your image, then click Add To Spotlight.
- Press Z to toggle the Spotlight dial/edit mode; Shift+Z to show/hide the overlay.
- Use the dial to Move/Scale/Rotate, adjust Opacity and Spotlight Radius. Enable Tile if needed.
- For painting color: enable RGB (disable ZAdd), set RGB Intensity.
- For projecting depth from an image/alpha: enable ZAdd/ZSub, set Z Intensity, and ensure Brush > Samples > Spotlight Projection is ON.
- Use a clean brush (e.g., Standard, Paint, or DragRect for decals) and stroke over the visible image to project.
Essential tips
- Resolution first: Subdivide until your point count supports the texture detail (5–10M pts for high-res pores/cloth weaves).
- Match light/color: Pre-correct images (neutral light, color balance) to minimize patchwork.
- Dial control: Lower Opacity to blend softly; nudge Spotlight Radius to sharpen/soften projection edges.
- Pinpoint decals: Use DragRect with a crisp alpha and set ZAdd off (color only) for labels/logos.
- Hard-surface panels: Convert black/white images to 16-bit grayscale alphas; project with ZAdd for stamped depth.
Seamless coverage workflow
- Plan overlap: slightly overlap projections with low RGB/Z intensity, then blend with smooth polypaint (Color > Smooth).
- Use Polygroups or masks to protect adjacent regions when projecting near edges.
- For tiling fabrics: enable Tile in the dial, align pattern, paint broad coverage, then add a second pass for wear and variation.
Troubleshooting
- Blurry results: Increase subdivision or use higher-res source; verify Spotlight Radius isn’t too large.
- Nothing projects: Ensure Spotlight is visible (Shift+Z), Brush > Spotlight Projection is ON, and the correct channels (RGB/ZAdd) are active.
- Stretching near silhouettes: Project from views aligned to the target surface; use smaller brush size and more camera angles.
Finishing and export
- For texture workflows: Tool > Texture Map > Create > New from Polypaint once UVs are ready.
- Batch maps with Multi Map Exporter (normal, displacement, AO) after projection is complete.
