ZBrush Tip: Sculptris Pro: Adaptive Tessellation for Rapid Sculpting

Sculptris Pro frees you from topology constraints by tessellating on the fly—perfect for rapid ideation, bold shape exploration, and iterative concepting.

  • When to use
    • Early exploration on a sphere or rough blockout where shapes are still fluid.
    • Adding local detail (wrinkles, pores, cuts) exactly where the eye needs it.
    • Quick sketch sculpts to validate proportions before committing to quads.
  • Set up in seconds
    • Enable Sculptris Pro from Stroke > Sculptris Pro (or the top bar icon).
    • Detail Size controls target triangle size; lower values = more detail.
    • Adaptive Size ON: draw size influences density (small brush = finer mesh).
    • Use Global ON: one Detail Size shared across brushes for consistency.
    • Refine Stroke/Reduce Stroke: add or remove triangles as you sculpt/smooth.
  • Brush tactics that shine
    • Move/Move Elastic: reshape silhouettes without stretching topology.
    • SnakeHook: concept horns, fins, and tendrils—then Reduce to lighten.
    • Dam_Standard/Pinch: cut-in creases; density auto-refines along the stroke.
    • ClayBuildup/HPolish: build planes fast, then tighten edges with Pinch.
    • Backface Mask ON for thin shells to prevent unintended inner pulls.
  • Control density like a pro
    • Use small Draw Size to pack detail in critical areas (eyes, lips, joints).
    • Temporarily disable Adaptive Size for uniform density when needed.
    • Smooth with Reduce enabled to decimate overbuilt zones without losing form.
    • Periodically pass with a large brush + Reduce to keep counts reasonable.
  • Paint as you sculpt
    • Polypaint works great in Sculptris Pro; no UVs required.
    • Block color/rough materials early to judge read and break symmetry.
  • Topology handoff (clean, quad-ready)
    • Duplicate your SubTool before retopology.
    • ZRemesher (with Guides if needed) to convert triangles to clean quads.
    • Project All from the Sculptris mesh to the new quad mesh; subdivide for polish.
    • Unwrap with UV Master after you commit to topology.
  • Performance and safeguards
    • Not compatible with subdivision levels or existing UVs; enabling it will remove them. Work on a duplicate.
    • Work per SubTool and use folders to keep concepts organized.
    • Save incrementally; dynamic tessellation can grow quickly.
  • Fast workflow recipe
    • Sphere > Sculptris Pro ON > block primary/secondary forms (Move, ClayBuildup).
    • Refine features where needed; Reduce elsewhere to stay lean.
    • Quick Polypaint to evaluate volumes and emphasis.
    • ZRemesher + Project All > Subdivide > final detailing and map export.
