Fast check routine (under a minute)
- Press F to frame the visible mesh (or current SubTool) and set a consistent view for evaluating responsiveness.
- Press Shift+F to toggle PolyFrame. Look for:
- Uneven triangle/quad sizes, especially tiny clusters around booleans or pinched areas.
- Overly dense polygroups in small regions versus large, sparse zones elsewhere.
- Rotate, zoom, and make a few broad brush strokes. Note where navigation or stroke feedback lags—those areas usually correlate with dense wireframe patches.
- Toggle Solo and hide non-critical SubTools (Ctrl+Shift) to isolate whether lag is local (one SubTool) or global (scene-wide).
- Glance at Active/Total Points in the title bar; big jumps when revealing a SubTool indicate the main culprit.
Typical causes you’ll spot with Shift+F
- Dynamesh set too high after booleans or merges, producing micro-polys across the whole model.
- Legacy subtools holding extreme SubDivision Levels when you only need detail in small zones.
- Fragmented polygroups from iterative cuts, creating dense, irregular edge loops.
- Imported scans or CAD tessellations with needless density in flat areas.
Targeted fixes (pick what fits)
- Use ZRemesher with Keep Groups and a reasonable Target Polygon Count to regularize flow; Project back details if needed.
- Decimation Master for export-heavy assets or when you need viewport speed without topology edits (preserves silhouette well).
- Rebuild SubDivision Levels: ZRemesh > Subdivide > Project All iteratively so you can step down for broad edits.
- Split heavy parts into separate SubTools; hide what you’re not sculpting to keep the active point count low.
- Use HD Geometry only for camera-facing micro detail instead of globally increasing density.
Practical habits
- Keep Shift+F on while refining forms; if density begins bunching up, fix early—before committing more detail.
- Before polishing, press F to reframe and stress-test navigation at a neutral distance; subtle lag shows up best here.
- Store and prune Undo History periodically to reclaim memory on long sessions.
