ZBrush Tip: Production-Safe Mirroring and Polypaint Transfer in ZBrush

Tip of the Day

Need your sculpt and polypaint mirrored cleanly without reworking the other side? Here’s a reliable, production‑safe approach.

Understand your mirror options

  • Geometry > Modify Topology > Mirror And Weld: Copies one side to the other and welds across the axis. Fastest when your model is centered and clean. Also mirrors Polypaint and Polygroups.
  • Deformation > Mirror: Flips a SubTool to the opposite side. Great for swapping the source side before Mirror And Weld.
  • SubTool > Mirror: Creates a mirrored duplicate as a new SubTool (non‑destructive). Useful before projection workflows.

Workflow A — One‑click symmetry with Mirror And Weld (fastest)

  • Verify alignment: Enable the Floor (X axis line) to ensure your seam sits at X=0.
  • Go to the lowest subdivision level. If needed, use Geometry > Freeze SubDivision Levels first.
  • Enable Polypaint > Colorize so color transfers with the geometry.
  • Run Geometry > Modify Topology > Mirror And Weld on X. If it mirrors the wrong direction, use Deformation > Mirror (X) and try again.
  • If you see a center gap, slightly raise WeldDist or nudge the center line to cross X=0, then repeat.

Workflow B — Mirror polypaint (and detail) without changing topology (safe projection)

  • Duplicate your SubTool. On the duplicate, run Deformation > Mirror (choose X/Y/Z as needed).
  • Select the original as the active SubTool, keep the mirrored duplicate visible beneath it.
  • In the SubTool palette, open Project.
  • Disable ZAdd/ZSub if you only want color; enable RGB. Click Project All to transfer polypaint from the mirrored copy.
  • For multi‑res meshes, project from lowest to highest subdivision to retain both forms and color cleanly.

Troubleshooting

  • Nothing changes on Mirror And Weld: It’s copying from the opposite side. Use Deformation > Mirror to swap the source, then try again.
  • Center seam artifacts: Increase WeldDist slightly or make sure vertices cross X=0 before welding.
  • Color didn’t transfer: Ensure Polypaint > Colorize is on for both SubTools and that RGB is enabled when projecting.
  • UV considerations: If you mirrored the mesh, review UVs with Morph UV and rebake maps if needed.

Pro tips

  • Assign hotkeys to Deformation > Mirror and Mirror And Weld for rapid iteration.
  • Store a Morph Target before major mirrors for easy comparison or cleanup.
  • Keep a pre‑mirror version saved to quickly A/B results or branch variations.
