For controlled edits in ZBrush, MaskPen provides a fast way to protect specific areas while preserving complete freedom to sculpt, transform, or apply surface effects elsewhere.
Hold Ctrl while working on a model to access ZBrush’s masking tools, then select MaskPen from the Brush palette. Paint directly over the polygons you want to protect. Masked areas appear darker and are excluded from most sculpting and deformation operations.
Precision begins with the correct brush size. Press S to adjust Draw Size, or use your preferred brush-size shortcut. A smaller radius is ideal for eyelids, panel seams, fingers, ornaments, and other narrow forms. Increase the radius when blocking larger protected regions, then reduce it for cleanup.
For cleaner boundaries, rotate the model frequently rather than attempting to complete the mask from one viewpoint. MaskPen paints only the visible surface by default, so inspecting the model from several angles helps reveal gaps around silhouettes, undercuts, and recessed areas. Activating Transform > L.Sym can also keep masks symmetrical when working on characters or mirrored designs.
Use these practices to improve accuracy:
After painting, soften the transition by Ctrl-clicking directly on the model. A blurred mask is useful for smooth Move, Inflate, and deformation results. If a firm border is required, sharpen the mask through the Masking palette or use repeated sharpening operations carefully. Hard mask edges can create abrupt steps, particularly on low-resolution geometry.
MaskPen becomes especially effective when paired with Gizmo 3D. Mask the region that should remain stationary, invert the mask if needed, and transform the exposed area. This workflow is excellent for adjusting proportions, bending accessories, repositioning facial features, or isolating mechanical components without creating separate SubTools.
Before committing to a major transformation, store a Morph Target or duplicate the SubTool. This provides a reliable recovery point if the mask boundary produces unwanted stretching.
