ZBrush Tip: Photographic MatCap Workflow for ZBrush

Capture a good source image:

  • Photograph or render a perfectly centered sphere under a single, dominant light. Avoid multi‑light setups and hard cast shadows.
  • Use a square canvas (1:1), high resolution (at least 1–2K), and ensure the sphere fills most of the frame.
  • Neutral background (preferably black) and consistent exposure. Minimize clipped highlights; soft roll‑offs work best.
  • For realism, shoot two spheres: a diffuse gray ball and a glossy ball; choose the look that suits your MatCap’s intent.

Build the MatCap in ZBrush:

  • Import the photo: Texture palette > Import (Flip V if needed later).
  • Select a MatCap base (e.g., MatCap Gray) to modify: Material palette > choose a MatCap preset.
  • Open Material > Modifiers and assign your imported image to the MatCap texture slot. This maps normal directions to your photographed lighting.
  • Refine with Modifiers: adjust Diffuse strength, Specular intensity/curve, Cavity/AO contribution, and Noise for micro breakup.
  • Optionally use MatCap Maker for guided sampling: load your photo as the source image, pick diffuse and highlight samples, then accept and fine‑tune.

Practical usage tips:

  • MatCaps ignore scene lights and most LightCap settings. Add depth via BPR AO and Shadows if needed.
  • Per‑SubTool materials: select the MatCap, enable M or MRGB, then Color > FillObject to lock it in. Great for multi‑material turntables.
  • Create two variants: a high‑contrast grayscale for sculpting readability and a color version for presentation.
  • Save and share: Material > Save As (.ZMT). Store in LightBox for quick access; version them for teams.

Quality and troubleshooting:

  • Flat or banded look: use a higher‑res source, soften harsh transitions, or raise Diffuse slightly.
  • Highlight too hot: clamp whites in the source image or lower Specular intensity/curve.
  • Odd orientation: try Texture > Flip V (or H) to align the MatCap with ZBrush’s normal map.
  • Shadow artifacts: avoid strong cast shadows in the source; MatCaps bake those permanently.
