ZBrush Tip: Optimizing ZRemesher Topology with Strategic Guides

ZRemesher Guides help direct edge flow around important anatomical, mechanical, or deformation-sensitive areas. Rather than leaving the entire retopology decision to ZRemesher, a few carefully positioned curves can encourage cleaner loops and more predictable results.

Select the ZRemesher Guides brush from the Brush palette, then draw curves directly on the sculpt before running ZRemesher. Focus on structural lines where topology direction matters most:

  • Loops around the eyes and mouth
  • The jawline, nasolabial fold, and border of the ear
  • Shoulders, elbows, knees, and other bending joints
  • Hard-surface panel borders and major design transitions
  • Long directional forms such as limbs, horns, or tails

Use fewer guides than you think you need. Guides are directional suggestions, not manually drawn edge loops. Too many intersecting or tightly packed curves can compete with one another and produce uneven polygon density. Start with the minimum number required to describe the intended flow, run a test remesh, and add another guide only when the result clearly needs correction.

Follow these practical steps for better control:

  1. Prepare the silhouette. ZRemesher cannot compensate for unresolved primary forms. Clean the overall shape and remove distracting surface noise first.
  2. Draw long, confident curves. A continuous guide generally communicates direction more effectively than several short, fragmented strokes.
  3. Avoid unnecessary intersections. Crossing guides can create ambiguous instructions. Where flows must meet, keep the junction simple and intentional.
  4. Use symmetry when appropriate. Activate symmetry before drawing guides on a symmetrical character so both sides receive equivalent direction.
  5. Adjust Curve Strength. In Tool > Geometry > ZRemesher, increase Curve Strength when ZRemesher is not following the guides closely enough. Avoid immediately using an extreme value; strong guidance can distort otherwise natural topology distribution.
  6. Test at a moderate target count. Evaluate the flow before committing to a dense mesh. A lower-resolution result makes problematic loops easier to identify.

Guides work especially well when combined with Polygroups. Enable KeepGroups when group boundaries represent meaningful part separations, panel borders, or material regions. Let Polygroups preserve major boundaries while curves indicate the desired direction inside those regions.

Do not expect guides alone to create production-ready animation topology. ZRemesher is excellent for generating an organized sculpting mesh and a strong retopology starting point, but facial rigs and extreme joint deformation may still require manual refinement in a dedicated modeling application.

Before accepting the result, inspect it with a simple material and PolyFrame enabled. Check for spiraling loops, sudden density changes, poles placed on bending areas, and edges that ignore the intended silhouette. If necessary, undo, simplify or reposition the guides, adjust Curve Strength, and remesh again.
