ZBrush Tip: Optimize the ZBrush Interface for Sculpting Workflows

ZBrush becomes significantly faster when its interface reflects the way you sculpt. Instead of navigating through multiple palettes, place frequently used controls near the canvas and remove elements that interrupt your workflow.

Before making changes, save the current interface through Preferences > Config > Save UI. This creates a recovery point if the new layout becomes too crowded or an important control is accidentally removed.

  • Open Preferences > Config.
  • Activate Enable Customize.
  • Hold Ctrl+Alt while dragging a button, slider, or switch to an available interface position.
  • To remove an interface item, hold Ctrl+Alt and drag it away from its current shelf onto the canvas.
  • Turn off Enable Customize before returning to sculpting.

Start with tools used repeatedly during a normal session. Useful candidates include Solo, Frame, Perspective, Local Symmetry, Dynamic brush size, subdivision controls, DynaMesh, ZRemesher, and frequently accessed masking commands. Keep related controls together so their location remains predictable.

A practical arrangement is to organize the interface by task:

  • Top shelf: file, project, undo, camera, and display controls.
  • Left shelf: brush, stroke, alpha, texture, and material selectors.
  • Right shelf: geometry, subdivision, masking, visibility, and SubTool controls.
  • Bottom shelf: timeline, layer, deformation, or project-specific commands.

Avoid adding every potentially useful button. An overloaded custom interface can be slower than the default layout because important controls become visually difficult to identify. Add only commands used several times per session, then work with the layout for a few days before expanding it.

Custom menus provide another level of organization. Under Preferences > Custom UI, create a menu for a specific workflow, such as “Retopology,” “Character,” or “Hard Surface.” While customization is enabled, place relevant controls inside that menu. A retopology menu might contain ZRemesher, projection, crease, polygroup, and subdivision functions without permanently filling the visible shelves.

When the layout is complete, use Preferences > Config > Save UI to save a portable interface file. Then select Store Config if you want ZBrush to load the current arrangement at startup. Save another copy outside the ZBrush installation directory so it remains available after updates, reinstalls, or workstation changes.

  • Create separate UI files for sculpting, Polypaint, hard-surface modeling, and presentation.
  • Use consistent positions for universal controls such as symmetry, perspective, and Solo mode.
  • Back up custom hotkeys together with the interface.
  • Test the layout at the monitor resolution used for production.

The goal is not to redesign ZBrush completely, but to reduce cursor travel and menu searching. A restrained, task-focused interface supports muscle memory and keeps attention on the model.
