ZBrush Tip: Multi-SubTool Transforms with Gizmo 3D

Need to reposition an entire character with props or align multiple parts quickly? Use Gizmo 3D to transform multiple SubTools in one pass and keep your scene tidy and consistent.

  • Fast group transforms with Folders:
    • Place related SubTools into a Folder in the SubTool palette.
    • Open the Folder menu and choose Transpose Set. ZBrush creates a temporary group mesh.
    • Press W (Gizmo 3D), then Move/Scale/Rotate the whole set as one.
    • Click Accept to apply the transform back to all SubTools non-destructively.
  • Scene-wide edits with Transpose Master:
    • Go to Zplugin > Transpose Master > TPoseMesh to generate a proxy of all visible SubTools.
    • Use Gizmo 3D (W) to position, reorient, or uniformly scale the entire character and accessories.
    • When done, click TPose > SubT to transfer the transform back to the original SubTools, preserving subdivision levels, polypaint, and layers.

Precision and control with Gizmo 3D:

  • Set a custom pivot: drag the Gizmo’s center to a meaningful location (joint, hinge, contact point). Alt-drag to temporarily pick a surface point as a pivot.
  • Align fast: click the Gizmo gear icon and use Center To Mesh, Align To World, or Reset Orientation for predictable transforms.
  • Constrain with Shift: hold Shift during rotation to snap in clean increments (ideal for hard-surface assemblies).
  • Mask to isolate: anything masked won’t move. Ctrl+drag on empty canvas to clear all masks across SubTools before a global transform.

Workflow tips that save time:

  • Work with visible sets: hide unneeded SubTools to keep the proxy light and transforms responsive.
  • Use Local Symmetry when posing off-center parts to maintain mirrored behavior around each SubTool’s local pivot.
  • Store a Layer or Morph Target before big moves so you can blend back if needed.
  • Combine folder-based Transpose Set for parts of a model with Transpose Master for the whole character—both workflows complement each other.

Troubleshooting:

  • Unexpected parts not moving? They may be masked or hidden. Clear masks and ensure they’re visible before generating the proxy.
  • Pivot feels “off”? Use the Gizmo gear menu > Reset Pivot, then Center To Mesh and Align To World. For joints, manually place the pivot at the rotation center first.
  • Scale inconsistencies after import/export? Normalize with caution (Tool > Deformation > Unify) on a duplicate, or use consistent unit scale across apps before multi-part transforms.
