ZBrush Tip: Micro-Detail Workflow with ZBrush Standard Brush

Today’s tip focuses on extracting crisp, believable micro detail using ZBrush’s Standard Brush.

Prep for micro detail

  • Subdivision: Work at 4–12M points for skin, fabrics, and fine surfaces. Keep lower subdivision levels to step down if needed.
  • Non-destructive: Create a new Layer for each detail pass (pores, wrinkles, fabric) to blend or mute later.
  • Scale sanity: Use Dynamic Brush Scale (Preferences > Brush) so brush feel stays consistent across subtools.

Core Standard Brush setup

  • ZAdd with ZIntensity 8–25 for subtle build-up; hold Alt (ZSub) to carve micro valleys when needed.
  • Focal Shift between -70 and -95 to tighten the falloff and confine depth to a razor-thin area.
  • Draw Size 1–6 for pores and fine creases; increase slightly for fabric grain or knurling.
  • Brush > Depth > Imbed around 0–2 to keep strokes shallow and avoid ballooning.
  • Lazy Mouse on for controlled lines (Stroke > LazyMouse). Try LazyStep 0.25–0.6 and LazySmooth 8–16. Turn it off for stochastic pores.
  • Alphas: Start with Alpha 07 or 58 for skin; swap to your custom scan-derived alphas for realism.

Stroke modes that matter

  • Spray + soft alpha for natural pore breakup. Keep ZIntensity low and make multiple light passes.
  • DragDot/DragRect for placing specific features (bigger pores, scar edges, stitch nodes) with exact orientation.
  • Roll (Stroke > Modifiers) to repeat an alpha along a line for stitches or knurled patterns.

Targeted recipes

  • Skin pores: Standard + Spray, Alpha 58, ZIntensity 8–12, Focal Shift ≈ -90. Vary pressure and scale slightly every few strokes.
  • Fine wrinkles: Sketch paths lightly with Standard, then refine crests by alternating ZAdd and Alt (ZSub). Enhance with Dam_Standard only where extra pinch is needed.
  • Fabric/leather grain: Standard + Spray with a micro noise alpha; paint along tension lines and high-wear zones for authenticity.
  • Edges and micro bevels: Use Standard with small Draw Size and higher Focal Shift magnitude to raise subtle highlights on panel edges.

Control the spread

  • Mask By Cavity or Mask By Smoothness to keep pores in cavities and off hard edges (Tool > Masking).
  • Use Smooth Peaks sparingly to settle noisy pixels without erasing intent.
  • For quick do-overs, store a Morph Target and erase with the Morph brush where detail goes too far.

Performance and polish

  • Avoid Sculptris Pro for final micro passes; its dynamic tessellation can create uneven bake results.
  • Evaluate under multiple materials (MatCap Skin, Basic, and a high-contrast clay) to catch overcooking.

Exporting micro detail

  • Use Multi Map Exporter for tangent-space normals and 16-bit or 32-bit displacement maps.
  • Enable UDIMs when needed and match render scale settings early to avoid re-bakes.
