ZBrush Tip: GrowMask Workflow for Precise, Repeatable Selections

Use Grow Mask to expand selections with intention and repeatability for crisp modeling decisions, controlled deformations, and consistent panel widths.

Where to find it: Tool > Masking > GrowMask (and ShrinkMask). Tip: Assign a hotkey (Ctrl+Alt, then click the button and press your key) to iterate growth rapidly.

  • Create a clean starting mask:
    • Use Mask Lasso (Ctrl + drag) or MaskPen to define the initial area.
    • For structural selections, try Tool > Masking > Mask By Polygroups first, then refine.
  • Grow with intent:
    • Click GrowMask repeatedly to expand by topology steps for predictable “ring-based” widths.
    • Combine with ShrinkMask to bracket an exact selection width (grow a bit too far, then shrink back).
  • Refine edges:
    • Ctrl + click on the model to Blur Mask (soft falloff).
    • Ctrl + Alt + click on the model to Sharpen Mask (crisp borders).
    • Ctrl + click on empty canvas to Invert Mask; Ctrl + drag on empty canvas to Clear Mask.
  • Constrain growth:
    • Hide geometry you don’t want included; growth never crosses visibility boundaries.
    • Use polygroups strategically; Mask By Polygroups, then GrowMask for quick, clean banding.

Production uses

  • Panel widths and insets: GrowMask to the exact “bevel” width, Invert Mask, then use Deformation > Inflate or Polish By Features for controlled edges.
  • Cloth and armor extraction: Mask the garment area, GrowMask 1–2 steps for seam allowance, then Tool > SubTool > Extract for instant, tidy shells.
  • Weathering masks: Start with Mask By Cavity, GrowMask to catch adjacent surface, then Polypaint or Surface Noise for layered grunge.
  • Retopo prep: After ZRemesher, GrowMask along loop directions to isolate bands for local sculpting or creasing.

Accuracy tips

  • Topology matters: uneven density yields uneven growth. If selections step unpredictably, ZRemesher with KeepGroups for balanced rings.
  • Scale-aware growth: on very dense meshes, a single Grow step can be visually small—assign a hotkey and tap in measured counts (e.g., “3 taps = 3 edge-rings”).
  • Hard-surface cleanliness: Sharpen after the final grow; then apply Polish by Features at low intensity to keep silhouettes tight.

Troubleshooting

  • Mask bleeding across parts: enable visibility isolation (Solo or hide other islands) before growing.
  • Jagged borders: sharpen, then add one Blur and one Shrink step to even the edge without losing definition.
  • Asymmetric expansion on dynameshed sculpts: quickly ZRemesh or subdivide once to normalize polygon flow, then retry GrowMask.

Pro move: set up a custom UI button stack—GrowMask, ShrinkMask, Blur, Sharpen—in your shelf for rhythmic “grow-shrink-sharpen” workflows. This cadence is perfect for repeatable panel lines, gasket grooves, and selection bands.
