ZBrush Tip: Finalize High-Resolution Mesh with Delete Lower

When you’re committed to high-resolution detailing and no longer need the lower subdivision levels, removing them streamlines your tool, unlocks topology operations, and trims file overhead.

What “Delete Lower” does

  • Removes all lower subdivision levels from the active SubTool, preserving only the current high-resolution mesh.
  • Frees certain Geometry and Modify Topology functions that are disabled while multiple subdivision levels exist (e.g., Mirror And Weld, Close Holes, Delete Hidden, some ZModeler edits).
  • Reduces project file size and memory devoted to storing multi-res history, while keeping your highest-detail surface untouched.

Use it when

  • You are finishing a high-res sculpt for 3D print or rendering and won’t need to step down for broad edits.
  • You must run topology/cleanup operations blocked by subdivision levels.
  • You plan to decimate and export a single-resolution asset to an external DCC.

Preparation checklist (avoid irreversible loss)

  • Duplicate the SubTool before committing: SubTool > Duplicate. Name one “_HiOnly” for the Delete Lower pass and keep the original as a safety.
  • If you’ll need a low-poly later, export it now from the original tool at level 1 (or generate one with ZRemesher and store it).
  • Bake critical maps first (normal, displacement, cavity) with Multi Map Exporter so you retain down-stream flexibility.
  • Save incrementally or QuickSave. Consider a separate .ZPR archive.

How to apply

  • Inspect your lowest level’s silhouette. If it’s no longer relevant, proceed on the duplicated SubTool.
  • Go to Tool > Geometry and click Delete Lower. Your active high-res level becomes the only level.
  • Perform required operations (e.g., Mirror And Weld, Close Holes, boolean cleanup, decimation) without subd restrictions.

Important notes

  • UVs: If UVs were created at a lower level, they are preserved only if they existed on the high level at the time of deletion. Otherwise, unwrap again (UV Master works on any level but is faster on lower-density meshes).
  • Rebuild later? Reconstruct Subdiv can sometimes rebuild lower levels, but only on clean, all-quad, Catmull–Clark-compatible meshes. After booleans/triangles, reconstruction may fail—plan accordingly.
  • Need topology edits while keeping multi-res detail? Use Freeze SubDivision Levels instead, make changes, then unfreeze to reproject detail—slower, but non-destructive.

Pro tips

  • Hotkey it: Ctrl+Alt-click Delete Lower to assign a custom hotkey for fast commits.
  • Workflow split: Maintain two SubTools—“MultiRes” (for baking/retopo) and “HiOnly” (for late-stage polish, booleans, and print prep).
  • For 3D printing: Delete Lower on the “HiOnly” version, run Close Holes, Dynamesh (if needed), then Decimation Master for efficient, watertight export.
