ZBrush Tip: Eliminate UV Seams by Polypainting, Projection, and Proper Map Padding

UV seams don’t have to ruin your paint. Favor painting on geometry, project color where needed, then bake maps with proper padding to keep results seamless.

Why seams show up

  • Texture filtering (mipmaps, trilinear) pulls pixels from outside UV islands when padding is too small.
  • High-contrast strokes straddling a seam amplify tiny UV distortions.
  • Painting directly to a texture can misalign details at island borders.

Plan UVs to hide the problem

  • Use UV Master: Work on Clone, mark seams in low-visibility or low-frequency areas, then Unwrap and Copy/Paste UVs back to the original.
  • Enable Symmetry and use Density painting to give more space to detailed regions.
  • Preview distortion and borders with Morph UV to validate layout and seam placement.

Polypaint first, texture later

  • Subdivide to a level that comfortably holds your color detail; turn off any active Texture Map to ensure you’re painting vertices.
  • Use broad brushes to establish color across seam lines, then refine. Toggle Smooth Color sparingly to blend without washing out detail.
  • If a client texture exists, convert it to polypaint (Polypaint From Texture), disable the texture, and continue painting seamlessly on the mesh.

Project instead of painting across seams

  • Spotlight: Project textures onto the model with consistent camera angles; rotate around seam areas and blend with low RGB intensity passes.
  • ZProject Brush: Align source and target in screen space and gently project color across borders.
  • Project All (RGB only): Transfer clean polypaint from a source subtool to a UV’d target, bypassing UV seams entirely during painting.

Bake with generous padding

  • Set Tool > UV Map > Map Size appropriately for your deliverable (2K/4K for hero assets).
  • Increase Tool > UV Map > Border (e.g., 16–32) to create adequate edge bleed when generating maps.
  • Create Tool > Texture Map > New From Polypaint, then verify borders by previewing the texture.
  • Use Zplugin > Multi Map Exporter: enable Texture from Polypaint, set Map Size, Map Border padding, and Use Multiple Tiles if exporting UDIMs.

Quality check and quick fixes

  • Polygroups > Auto Groups With UV to isolate islands, then paint soft transitions near borders while viewing PolyFrame.
  • Test in your target app with mipmaps on. If seams persist, raise padding, upres the map, or soften border contrast in polypaint and rebake.
  • For engines that expect flipped textures, remember to Flip V on export (or set this in Multi Map Exporter).

Pro tips

  • Keep high-frequency details away from seams; let them live on continuous UV space where possible.
  • When using alphas, stamp perpendicular across seam lines and blend with a soft brush pass.
  • Document your Map Size, Border, and export settings for pipeline consistency.
