ZBrush Tip: Anatomically Aligned Transpose Lines for Controlled ZBrush Posing

A well-placed Transpose action line turns a difficult character adjustment into a controlled, predictable pose. Although Gizmo 3D is ideal for many transformations, the Transpose line remains especially useful when a rotation must follow the direction of a limb, finger, tail, horn, or other articulated form.

Begin by masking the geometry that should remain stationary. For example, when posing a forearm, protect the upper arm and torso while leaving the forearm and hand available for transformation. Blur the mask near the elbow to create a gradual deformation instead of a sharp bend.

  • Activate Transpose: choose Move, Scale, or Rotate, then switch from Gizmo 3D to the Transpose line if necessary.
  • Draw on visible geometry: click and drag across the unmasked area to create the action line.
  • Follow the anatomical axis: run the line along the center of the limb or form rather than across its surface.
  • Place the pivot carefully: position the end used for rotation at the joint’s natural center.

The action line contains control points at its beginning, middle, and end. Their behavior changes according to the active transformation mode. Rather than immediately making a large adjustment, test the line with a subtle move or rotation. If the form twists, stretches, or arcs incorrectly, undo the action and redraw the line. Correct placement is usually faster than repairing a poorly aligned deformation.

For a convincing elbow bend, draw the line from the elbow toward the wrist, keeping it centered through the forearm. In Rotate mode, work from the control point nearest the elbow so that the forearm swings around the joint. Use a side or orthographic view when establishing the line, then inspect the result from several angles. A line that appears centered from the front may be offset in depth.

Keep these practical habits in mind:

  • Turn on floor grids or use a clean side view when alignment matters.
  • Temporarily hide nearby SubTools if they obstruct line placement.
  • Use a softer mask transition around fleshy joints and a tighter mask around rigid armor.
  • Pose primary masses first; correct compression, stretching, and silhouette afterward.
  • Store a Morph Target or duplicate the SubTool before making major pose changes.
  • Redraw the action line for each joint instead of forcing one line to control an entire limb.

For fingers, horns, and tails, short action lines generally provide better control than one long line. Work segment by segment, placing each pivot where the form should naturally articulate. This reduces unwanted distortion and makes incremental posing easier to evaluate.

When a model contains many SubTools, use Transpose Master to generate a combined posing mesh, but apply the same action-line discipline: mask intentionally, align with the form’s axis, and test small transformations before committing. After transferring the pose back, inspect intersections and joint volume on the original SubTools.

The key principle is simple: the action line defines both direction and leverage. Accurate placement produces cleaner rotations, preserves volume, and minimizes corrective sculpting.
