ZBrush Tip: Alpha MidValue Calibration for Zero Displacement

Alpha midpoints decide where an alpha stamp neither inflates nor cuts. Set them correctly to avoid “puffing,” unwanted recesses, and depth bias across your surface.

What the midpoint does:

  • The MidValue in the Alpha palette defines which gray value is treated as zero displacement. Values brighter than MidValue push out; darker values cut in.
  • If MidValue is wrong, every stamp will add a net offset: too low = overall indentation; too high = overall inflation.

Calibrate your alpha quickly:

  • Alpha > Import your grayscale alpha (prefer 16-bit PNG/TIFF for clean gradients).
  • Alpha > Modify > Normalize to stretch the full value range if the source is flat.
  • Alpha > Modify > MidValue: start at 0.50. Test with DragRect on a subdivided plane.
  • Adjust in small steps (±0.02):
    • If the surface “lifts” after a neutral stamp, raise MidValue.
    • If it “sinks,” lower MidValue.
  • Refine with Alpha > Adjust curve to compress highlights/shadows without shifting the midpoint once it’s set.
  • Use Brush > Depth > Imbed to control how far the alpha penetrates the surface after the midpoint is correct.

Practical starting points:

  • Skin pores/neutral noise: MidValue ≈ 0.50 for balanced pores that neither swell nor cave in.
  • Wrinkles/cuts: MidValue ≈ 0.35 so the net effect biases slightly inward.
  • Rivets/bolts: MidValue ≈ 0.65 to bias outward, preserving a subtle seat around the form.

Combine midpoint with these controls:

  • ZIntensity sets amplitude; once MidValue is correct, intensity becomes truly symmetrical around zero.
  • Focal Shift controls edge softness; pair with clean midpoints to avoid halos.
  • Stroke > DragRect or DragDot gives consistent tests; Spray/DragDot benefit from a correct midpoint to prevent global drift.
  • BackfaceMask (Brush > Auto Masking) prevents unwanted printing through thin meshes once depth is calibrated.

Source and prep tips:

  • Create alphas in linear grayscale (gamma 1.0). Avoid sRGB curves that shift the effective midpoint.
  • Remove background gradients in an external editor so MidValue represents your actual “zero” gray.
  • Prefer high-bit-depth images; banding can masquerade as a wrong midpoint.

Workflow checklist:

  • Normalize > Set MidValue > Test stamp on plane > Fine-tune MidValue > Adjust curve > Lock-in Imbed and ZIntensity.
  • Save: Alpha > Export and Brush > Save As to preserve calibrated presets per project.

Troubleshooting fast:

  • Puffing after every stamp: increase MidValue slightly and retest.
  • Everything digs in: decrease MidValue slightly.
  • Edge halos: reduce Focal Shift, verify there’s no soft gray fringe in the alpha.
  • Depth feels inconsistent: check that the alpha wasn’t auto-converted to sRGB; re-import with correct color management.
