V-Ray Tip: V-Ray Refraction Compositing with Render Elements

Refraction is one of the most important—and easiest to mismanage—parts of a compositing workflow. Glass, liquids, translucent plastics, and polished transparent materials do more than reveal what is behind them: they bend, tint, blur, and reflect the environment. A clean V-Ray render-element strategy gives compositors the flexibility to refine these effects without compromising the physical logic of the final image.

Begin with a physically credible beauty render. Compositing should enhance an already valid render, not repair incorrect refraction settings. Confirm that each refractive material has appropriate values for:

  • Refraction color: Use near-white for clear glass; introduce subtle color only when the material genuinely absorbs light.
  • Index of Refraction (IOR): Standard window glass is typically close to 1.5. Incorrect IOR values create implausible distortion and Fresnel behavior.
  • Refraction glossiness or roughness: Use it to create frosted, etched, or imperfect glass. Avoid over-blurring transparent surfaces merely to hide noisy renders.
  • Refraction depth: Ensure rays can pass through the required number of overlapping glass layers, especially in architectural scenes with double glazing, furniture, bottles, and curtain walls.
  • Fog color and multiplier: For thick glass, liquids, or colored transparent objects, volume-based absorption produces more believable depth than simply darkening the refraction color.

Render the right passes before you need them. The V-Ray Refraction render element isolates the refracted contribution, making it easier to control transparent surfaces in compositing. It is most useful when paired with a practical set of supporting render elements:

  • Reflection: Glass appearance depends on both reflection and refraction. Adjusting one without reviewing the other often produces a flat result.
  • Specular: Preserve small highlights that define edges and communicate surface quality.
  • Lighting and GI elements: These help diagnose whether an unwanted color or brightness change comes from illumination rather than the refractive shader.
  • Cryptomatte: Create accurate, anti-aliased masks for specific glass objects, product parts, or liquid volumes without hand-rotoscoping.
  • Z-Depth: Use it carefully for atmospheric integration behind glass; it should complement the scene rather than blur refractive distortion.

Use a back-to-beauty mindset. In a linear compositing workflow, rebuild or verify the beauty image from its contributing passes before making creative adjustments. If the reconstructed result does not match the V-Ray beauty render, investigate color management, premultiplication, missing components, or blend modes first. This validation step prevents subtle errors from being amplified later.

When adjusting refraction, make modest changes. A compositor may reduce the intensity of a distracting background seen through glass, cool a tinted reflection, or balance an overly bright window. However, avoid treating the Refraction pass as a simple opacity layer. It contains a physically calculated view of the scene through the object, including distortion and transmitted illumination. Excessive grading can quickly detach the glass from its reflections, shadows, and surrounding light.

A reliable compositing checklist:

  • Check the beauty render at 100% resolution before splitting passes.
  • Use Cryptomatte masks to target only the intended refractive object.
  • Grade refraction and reflection together when changing the perceived glass appearance.
  • Watch edges for dark or bright halos caused by incorrect premultiplication.
  • Keep adjustments reversible and document node settings for later revisions.
  • Compare the comp against the original V-Ray beauty frequently to retain realism.
